In every election or campaign, there are events and other occurrences that can one can look back to and realize the significance of what transpired. For example, the stock market crash on September 16, 2008 was not only a significant day in our nation’s history, but it also had an enormous effect on the elections that followed in November. Usually it takes time for people to realize the significance of what actually occurred.
While it’s not a day that will ever show up in a history book, Saturday, June 30, 2007, is was important day in the history of the Iowa Caucuses. On that day, six presidential candidates participated in a candidate forum that was put on by Iowans for Tax Relief and the Iowa Christian Alliance. The event was a success for both organizations, but the candidate who gained the most politically from the event was the one both organizations refused to invite – Dr. Ron Paul.
June 30, 2007 was the first day that Iowans got a taste of the “Ron Paul Revolution.” His loyal legion of supporters made life difficult for the sponsoring organizations and the Republican Party of Iowa in the days leading up to the forum. They jammed phone lines, sent email, and protested in support of the snubbed candidate. The Paul campaign also rented out the room next to where the candidate forum was being held, and they filled it with more people than ITR/ICA had their event.
The who’s who of Republican operatives, candidates, activists, and central committee members attended the ITR/ICA forum, yet hardly any of them ventured next door to Ron Paul’s event. I still can remember the reaction I received from some of the organizers when I attended the Paul event and told them that I was with the Republican Party of Iowa. The event was big success for the Paul campaign, and it allowed me to build some relationships with members of the Paul campaign.
If you had mentioned Ron Paul’s name at a Republican state central committee meeting in 2007, the response you would receive in return would have not been flattering. Paul did participate in the Straw Poll, attended the Reagan Dinner, and met the criteria of the Fox News Debate that never came to fruition. Still, party insiders never embraced or really understood Paul’s campaign.
The make-up of the Republican State Central Committee changed dramatically at the last district conventions that were held on April 29th and May 1st. Of the 15 district representatives, only five were re-elected. Of the ten new faces, four of them are associated with the Campaign for Liberty, a group who shares many supporters with Ron Paul.
The block of four votes makes for an immensely powerful coalition inside the Iowa GOP. To put that in perspective, it takes nine votes to elect someone as chairman of the Republican Party of Iowa. In addition to electing party leadership, the central committee is also heavily involved in organization of the Iowa Straw Poll and the caucuses.
Two of the four Campaign for Liberty members who were elected to the SCC are longtime Republican activists. Drew Ivers, who served as Ron Paul’s campaign manager for the caucuses, returns to the SCC after a 24-year hiatus. Ivers told TheIowaRepublican.com, “In 1984 and 1986, the Iowa Republican Party was in the minority. It has always been my goal to make it a majority party.”
Ivers resigned his position on the SCC when he went to work for Pat Robertson in 1997. “I’ve always been as far right in the party as you can be without leaving it. I always joke that I can feel the tent flapping against my leg,” Ivers added.
Joining Ivers is longtime Polk County activist David Fischer, Ames realtor and Story County GOP Chairman A.J. Spiker, and Jeremiah Johnson from the 1st District. Johnson’s brother, Will, is a candidate for Congress in the 1st District.
Since the 2008 caucuses, no potential presidential candidate has visited Iowa more than Ron Paul. With a friendlier SCC, a tailor made political environment, and a wealth of knowledge from his previous run, Ron Paul could be a force to be reckoned with in the 2012 Iowa caucuses.
Congressman Paul returns to Iowa this weekend to headline the Campaign for Liberty’s regional conference. The event will be held at the Embassy Suites in Des Moines on May 14 to 16. The conference will focus on the future of conservatism in America. For more information click here.

Yes, I’m sure renouncing Israel, letting Iran get the bomb and blaming our federal government for the 9/11 towers falling will win us back the majority. Great strategy!
Well Justyn…
If you see members of the SCC affiliated with the CFL doing so…call them out on it. Hold them accountable for their words and actions.
Ron Paul was right on just enough “hot button” issues to be credible, but he just didn’t pass the smell test for a majority of Republicans. Unfortunately, there wasn’t anyone else that had a clear enough message that could coaless behind a single candidate. The sad fact was that out of all of them, there really wasn’t anybody that could clearly define the GOP message or rally a real majority of Republicans.
Fast forward to today and we see the same type of fracturing of the base. However, I believe that finally enough folks understand the risk of not getting behind the nominee(although there are a few that still can’t see the forest for the trees!!!). The old saying “Either we hang together, or we will hang separately” needs to be heeded. The dems have understood this for a long time. They may follow their standard-bearers over the cliff, but they will be walking in lock-step all the way to the end!
Ron Paul has good theoretical rhetoric (whew!) but lacks any grounding in reality. It’s simply too ironic that the right wing of the GOP seem unable to accept that we live in a democratic, pluralist society. Conservatism is not a gospel, it’s a point of view. Politics is not a religion, it’s a game of compromise.
“Politics is not a religion, it is a game of compromise.” AMEN!!!
Where are your “principles”?
What are you getting accomplished with yours?
To take off on Timmys first post, another thing the libs have done that right-wingers won’t is to embrace incrementalism and look at policy from a long-term perspective. For example, you’d likely accuse a congressman of abandoning his principles if he supported a 15% inheritance tax, even though the effect of his “standing firm” and not supporting anything more than a 0% tax means that we’ll be left with the current rate of 55%
There’s no political heaven waiting for you when you fall on your own sword.
grand stand: If you think I was serious, I was using sarcasm. I took it for granted it was obvious. I am sorry and I totally agree with your assessment. We have a tragic turn of events working here. We have some very good people who have taken the Deace bait and in order to have access to his 15 hours weekly of free propaganda, they have agreed to worship him.
They are willing to see their state destroyed to have access to this free 15 hours weekly.
They are not patriots, they are traitors.
Thanks, Timmy!
I guess my first comment would be to say politics is war, and when it comes to liberal Democrats I’m pretty Spartan in my attitude – you don’t take prisoners and you don’t show mercy. Ever. Conservative Democrats can be worked with so they aren’t included in that calculation.
As far as compromise, the problem with Republicans is that we actually compromise. We forget that we are fighting a war and don’t negotiate from that perspective. When you negotiate with liberals you always come out on top. You trash their house, kick the dog, loot their bank account, steal the family heirlooms, and run off with their daughter, but do it in such a way that not only do they think they got the better end of the bargain, they thank you for it. With a smile.
With liberals you always take everything and give them crumbs. You might not take it all this minute, but that’s only to give them a false sense of security. You keep pressing ahead to take the little ledge you left them standing on a few years down the road. You never put yourself in a position where they can do that to you and you never yield one inch of ground unless you are setting them up to take it back and more later.
I have to admit that I was very much against Ron Paul come into the party because though I agree with him 80% of the time, his foreign policy stance sucks and the conspiratorial stuff hurts credibility. Now though with the socialist theocrats posing as social conservatives having a heavy influence in the party, I’m happy to bring someone in with a more libertarian stance who realizes that heavy-handed govt, even though it’s your pet issue, is still heavy handed govt and a dangerous trojan horse that will come back to bite you. I realize we need morals and laws but we need to do a little more due diligence in the party of just how we want to use the govt to enforce that. We need to bring some balance to the Force.
I also think Paul along with the Tea Partiers can bring some organizational capabilities to the party and help decentralize and modernize things a bit to make the GOTV effort more viable as well as the reach and impact of our message. We need to get past the whole Madison Avenue branding thing and let the portfolio of our candidates and elected officials speak for themselves. We need to get faster, nimbler, communicate more, and network better. We also need to tap the power of the computer further and further and keep pushing the realm of it’s possibilities to help us anticipate and be a step ahead of the curve v. always reacting to what the Dems do.
Nice to see small government Republicans on state central committee. Beats the heck out of the moderate Republican and ICA/IFPC state central committee that Iowa GOP has had lead it into the minority party.
“I would remind you that extremism in the defense of liberty is no vice! And let me remind you also that moderation in the pursuit of justice is no virtue!” – GOLDWATER-64′
Barry Goldwater would be blasted by modern day Republicans for being pro choice, supporting gay rights & wanting to keep religion out of politics. “Mr. Conservative” would not be conservative enough for some people. Nor would Ronald Reagan, for that matter.
As for the Ron Paul people on the SCC, I just hope they remember their primary role….helping ALL Republicans get elected. That means supporting all GOP nominees, whoever they may be. The SCC serves the REPUBLICAN PARTY, not their own ideologies or chosen candidates.
I’d also be curious to know their thoughts on RPI platform issues that are in direct contradiction with Ron Paul’s views. Perhaps that would have been helpful to know before they were elected.
Matt: You have completely proved my point. Elevating a political discussion to the level of “war” suggests you support the literal destruction of all those who disagree with you. That’s zealotry, totalitarian, fascist…lunacy.
Listen to your self-righteous hypocritical moralizing. You think I’m so stupid not to realize that all that labelling and name calling is nothing but pacification tactics to get me to back down so you can shove your agenda down my throat?
I don’t have an agenda. I’m as disgusted with liberals who believe they’re “at war” with Republicans. The polarization of the political class is what’s really destroying our nation. A democracy can’t work when those of opposing views refuse to work together for the betterment of all.
A scorched earth policy with get you just that.
Who in the hell are “Iowan’s for Responsible Government”??? I just got a mailing from them today, whatta load of horse$#!+ !!! Since they quote an article by deace I figure they are a bunch of loons, just wondering if anybody here knows who they are……
Politics is war, without bloodshed.
War is politics, through bloodshed.

Branstad Campaign: Calls on Democrat front group to reveal its donors
5/11/2010
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: Tuesday, May 12, 2010
Contact: Tim Albrecht (515) 276-2266
Creation of group clear sign Democrats believe Branstad is only candidate who can defeat Culver
(URBANDALE) – Jeff Boeyink, campaign manager for Governor Branstad 2010, today demanded the release of information on what groups or individuals are paying for new ads making misleading attacks on the record of Gov. Terry Branstad in an attempt by Democrat operatives to impact the Republican primary election.
The group, calling itself Iowans for Responsible Government, is led by liberal trial lawyer, failed congressional candidate, former Chairman of the Iowa Democratic Party, and donor to Chet Culver’s campaign, Rob Tully, and today began airing ads that attempt to mislead Iowans about the record of Gov. Terry Branstad.
“This front group for Democratic operatives and interests who are clearly convinced that Terry Branstad is the one Republican candidate who can defeat Chet Culver this fall, was created just days ago and already has the resources to run television ads,” said Boeyink. “Clearly, there are some big money interests behind this effort and Iowa Republicans have a right to know who is paying for these misleading attacks.”
“Iowa Republicans have a big decision to make on June 8, as the winner of this primary will carry the banner for the GOP into the fall,” Boeyink continued. “With Rob Tully leading this Democrat front group on behalf of Chet Culver, Iowa Republicans already have reason to dismiss these ads as desperate politics from those fearful of a Branstad candidacy and what that means for Republican prospects, statewide. I challenge Mr. Tully to immediately disclose the source of these funds and come clean to Iowans about your motives.”
Here is the rest of the story that the current ads fail to mention:
· No Governor before or since has reduced taxes more than Terry Branstad. The net result of tax changes during his administration is at least a $124 million reduction in state taxes (adjusted for inflation to 2008 dollars).
· Governor Branstad cut income taxes for all Iowans by 10% and eliminated the inheritance tax for children and grandchildren.
· Governor Branstad was the first Iowa Governor to balance the state’s budget based on generally accepted accounting principles.
· When Terry Branstad left office, Iowa had a budget surplus approaching one billion dollars.
· Governor Branstad strictly enforced Iowa’s spending limitation, took state spending off automatic pilot, and fully funded our state priorities.
· At the time Terry Branstad left office Iowa’s unemployment rates was 2.5%, the lowest in the nation at that time and the lowest in Iowa’s history.
For more information on the Governor Branstad 2010 campaign, please visit http://www.GovernorBranstad2010.com.
Branstad’s supporters better get busy and step it up. Everyone’s attacking Branstad and they intend to go ’scortched earth.’ Branstad’s people need to focus their message, or he will begin slipping down the home stretch. Democrats are definately meddling in this, using false and deceptive practices, but what’s new?
Our Republican State Auditor Dave Vaudt endorses Branstad. That’s a huge development.
Ron Paul’s 2012 run begins here…
http://www.TheRonPaulTeaParty.com
RedIowa 2010: Rob Tully, huh? Now why would somebody like that be quoting deace??? Birds of a feather……
mainstreet, I just got the robocall literally a couple of minutes ago. Interesting……….
1. Auditor Vaudt just endorsed Branstad… just read that on kcci.com
2. I think now that the Democrats are attacking Branstad it is time all Republicans start rallying around Branstad. It is clear that they fear him greatly or they wouldn’t be playing in a Primary.
just googled “Vaudt endorses Branstad” It’s gone viral within the last 20 minutes. Very big news
Tully and the Dems are using Deace for their own purposes. Let’s see if Deace repudiates Tully and his front group for Culver…or encourages them to join him in seeking to destroy Branstad.
My guess is the whole GOP Iowa leadership will endorse Branstad. Will not be a suprise. Hmmm….reminds my of ‘07 and ‘08.
What this really should remind you of Stacia is 2002 and 2006. You know, every other year that Bob Vander Plaats ran and lost. Don’t blame the voters for not supporting BVP, blame Bob. He has never been able to seal the deal.
When this all ends for Bob in a month, will he get a real job? What’s it been? Like 10 years since he has had one?
This is a thread about the impact of the Ron Paul Revolution, not about TEB or BVP. Quit hijacking the thread.
I clicked on the link and Branstad is the only Republican Running for Governor who didn’t sponsor the conference on “The Future of Conservatism in America” (go to the link below the article). With 4 members of this group on the state committee he must be an idiot to not reach out to them. It could be that after voting to increase taxes 30 times Branstad could care less about the conservative movement or conservative voters.
Both Vander Plaats and Roberts are sponsors. http://www.campaignforliberty.com/event/2010iowa.php
What makes it even worst is that Narcisse is a sponsor of this conservative event and Branstad isn’t. Would someone please wake up the former Governor of Iowa and tell him that he needs to reach out to conservatives if he expects to beat Culver this fall.
Stacia, don’t you hate it when facts get in the way or your story?
Vaudt didn’t endorse anyone in ‘07-’08′:
“Until today, I’ve never made an endorsement in a Republican primary,” said Vaudt. “I’ve met with all three candidates. No one asked me for my endorsement.”
AuH20, Branstad not giving money to the Ron Paul wackos just gave me another reason to vote for him.
Maybe Branstad believes in things like supporting our ally Israel, and isn’t a 9/11 Truth douchebag like so many Paulbots are.
Reality is, that 4 out of 15 seats is a very good start. But once upon a time, the ICA and its folks won only 4 seats on this same body and they were an infective but irritating minority. Then they got to 8 seats, and their leadership completely was corrupted by the party machine. And for the last 15 years, they have given lip service to the base which elected them, while doing everything to gain personal power at the expense of those ideals. Do not repeat history. You will be sorely temped to do so in ways you cannot yet even imagine. 4 out of 15 is a good start, but keep your eyes wide open.
Wise council Wayward. As an active member of both CFL leadership and local party leadership, I believe that those at risk are well grounded and above reproach. However, it is true that they must always be vigilant, and we must also.
Red247, I wasn’t talking about Vaudt’s endorsements in’07 and ‘08, I was talking about endorsements in general. They didn’t carry much weight.
The Republican party used to fight for the rights of the unborn. Who is more pro-life than Dr. Paul? I am a former Marine, so when I hear someone say Paul’s foreign policy “sucks,” I like to remind folks that in 2008, Ron Paul received more PRIVATE donations from military service members than ALL other candidates COMBINED!! It’s time for the Founders’ foreign policy instead of that from the Council on Foreign Relations. (P.S. –FACT–The “official” story of 9-11 is a CONSPIRACY THEORY and nobody believes it.”) God Bless America.
Something about this Ron Paul ‘revolution’ crap and the stacking of the RSCC has a familar odor to it, sort of like something from maybe 25 – 30 years ago over in Illinois.
Smells like Lyndon Larouche under a different name, to me.
Red247
If you want Branstad to ignore the 10,000+ people who voted for Ron Paul in the 2008 Iowa Caucus that is your business and that kind of stupidity cost us the white house in 08. I think ANY Republican running for GOV would be an idiot to ignore these folks. Branstad should ignore people like you because you will vote republican 247 just like your screen name says and you are already in the bag.
I haven’t decided who I’m supporting, but it won’t be anyone who gives $500 pandering to the Paulbots. By your analysis, if you don’t give money to every special interest group, you’re “ignoring” them. That’s brilliant.
And you’re right, I will more than likely vote straight Republican ticket, but they are much better than the alternative. If a good independent comes along, I will consider them.
Red247 you said: “Maybe Branstad believes in things like supporting our ally Israel, and isn’t a 9/11 Truth douchebag like so many Paulbots are.”
I met Ivers at a Veterans for Paul event in 08. He is a combat wounded Vietnam Vet who cares about America. He is no 9/11 Truth douchebag (if you are implying that) and I doubt Fischer, Spiker and Johnsen are either. In fact I have never met a 9/11 truther.
As for Israel. Keep drinking the kool-aid, sounds like you support America’s Israel policy where America sends 1.5X as much money to muslim countries in the middle east as it gives to Israel. We’re broke and Israel would be better off if we kept the $1 we give them and if we didn’t give the muslim countries $1.50 to destroy Israel.
By all means keep supporting Israel and blame people who can do the math.
LOL thinking of Jeff Boeyink. Poor fellow. He can’t take the pain when others do to him what he and his Branstad/Mitt Romney cronies are doing to others with the America Future Fund, Iowa Future Fund, etc. Jeff, what goes around comes around. You first come clean with all the foolish people/contributors for America Future Fund that is attacking Dr. Ron Paul’s son in the Kentucky U.S. Senate race before you ask others to do so. Beleve it or not Jeff, Rand Paul will win and will LOL at the monies your friends have wasted.
Commoner Sense: There is nothing to work with the liberals on. There agenda is absolute power, control, and dictating every aspect of life to the average person. It’s a cultist mentality that you can’t reason with. You cannot compromise with someone who won’t compromise. You can only defeat them.
Besides, nothing they stand for is about anything this country was founded on. I am comfortable that the Founders would not have a problem with my perspective on liberals.
It’s refreshing to see the amount of new energy surging toward Constitutionally limited government. Thomas Paine said it best ” We have it in our power to begin the world over again “. And so we are.
I love that you zombies are so petrified of Ron Paul and his REAL conservative principles!
Petrified? No, we just find that Paul has a cult-like following very similar to BVP!
Yes, Ron Paul makes some valid points, but there is far too much crazy $#!+ wrapped around it for most to swallow.
I disagree. Most PEOPLE swallow it and like the taste. It’s most republican party sheep who find it averse to their gag reflex. Of course, if Thomas Jefferson were to burst on the scene today, the same people probably describe what he would have to say with vulgar adjectives too.
Who said it? Thomas Jefferson or Ron Paul,
Foreign Policy
“Commerce with all nations, alliance with none, should be our motto.”
“No foreign aid; no treaties that commit US to future wars.”
Liberty
“I have no ambition to govern men; it is a painful and thankless office.”
“I don’t want to run your life. We all have different values..”
Banking
“If the American people ever allow private banks to control the issue of their money, first by inflation and then by deflation, the banks and corporations that will grow up around them (around the banks), will deprive the people of their property until their children will wake up homeless on the continent their fathers conquered.”
“Of course I’ve already taken a very modest position on the monetary system, I do take the position that we should just end the Fed.”
Justyn, I assure you that Ron Paul or anyone on the current SCC do not espouse “9/11 insider” theories. Nor does anyone want to “renounce Israel” or drop a bomb on Iran.
However, all would like to see more accountability and transparency in the Iowa RSCC, and see our Republican candidates actually *ahem* FOLLOW the Iowa Republican platform. We’d also like to effectively provide innovative tools and resources to candidates and grassroots while connecting the two in a way that will ensure us a win for conservative values this fall. We need everyone’s help.
CommonSense, and Matt Green. Interesting discussion. I agree, Matt, that when it comes to certain things we cannot waiver in doing that which is right. For example, if it is inherently wrong for me to steal from my neighbor to pay for my healthcare, it would be equally as wrong for me to delegate power to a government to do it on my behalf. However, our fellow Americans who are confused or have a muddled view of what government is, need our assistance in sharing their concerns and educating them on the best path for addressing these problems.
AuH2O – Well Put.
What is our part in effective change? Is it taking sides and voting for someone new? Is it getting behind a movement and managing the outrage? There is more to the American Revolution Solution than Ron Paul and it starts with each one of us. Who among you/us is on the receiving end of a handout or entitlement? Free insurance from the government because you were in the military? Sorry, that’s an entitlement program, get off it and get a job!. Free disability income because you can and not because you need it. Sorry if you really are in need, it is not you that I am talking to, it is the free loader who sees themselves as something other than a free loader. Social Security disability. There are some but too many are milking the system. Get a job! Free cheese? Free education? Free money/welfare? Get a job, even if it does not pay what you want. Do you complain about illegal immigrants and them taking jobs? Get over it. Go get the job yourself. My grandparents came to the USA and got jobs that paid little but they chose to work rather than taking a handout or whining about low wages…just as we all should do. You say they don’t pay enough, then work 2 jobs? Or stay on the unemployment roles and complain about the government. It’s garbage, you are the problem! How many of you are business owners who are milking the system for your advantage while blogging self-righteous or bashing type editorial? The corproate welfare is not just on Wall Street. It is right here in Des Moines, Iowa and right here in small businesses. Stop blaming everyone else. Have you or a relative taken steps to hide income or assets so you can receive more from the government? Have you bought a home and received the $6,500-$8,000 tax credit lately? Are you a farmer who makes some of their living by walking to the mailbox and cashing a government subsidy check? Have you used your insurance policy to get over on a situation? If so, you are no better than the corporations you complain about. You do the same thing they do, that is, RIP-OFF when and where you can. Stop it. Did you join the military so you could retire after 20 years and be taken care of by the rest of us or did that issue have absolutely nothing to do with it and you simply wanted to serve your country? Touching but I am sort of skeptical here. Who are we and why are we so quick to look outside our own lives to find cures to that which we are part and parcel in creating the inequity and/or the problem? Do you cheat on your taxes?
There is no end to this list of garbage that we as a nation have either intentionally participated in or have been put in the situation of saying “well, it’s there, I might as well take it, everyone else is”. It’s time for a SELF CHECK folks. To be a true CONSERVATIVE we must commit to our own clean slate. It’s not easy but without it, no candidate or campaign stands a chance for change. We do need a moral compass in this country and it starts in the mirror.
Don’t get me wrong, I am no better than you and I believe in Ron Paul and I believe we need his type of change but what bothers me is that so many people I have talked with over the years have their own entitlement or system sucking behavior hidden away in their own closet yet publicly they bash the government or the opposing party. Do you know that even if Ron Paul is elected he does not have a ghost’s chance in hell at making the real and meaningful changes because people like you and me continue to be in line or hide in the corner for the next hand-out….subtle as it may be. How bad do you want CHANGE? Bad enough to BE THE CHANGE?
Dear Creepy earth;
You score some points here, but government waste, fraud and abuse are the biggest problems here. We’re talking felonious conduct at the state and federal level. We are in the midst of a socialist takeover–the velvet revolution. It’s a slow, incremental process, but it’s very real. Read some leftist websites to verify.
Mainstreet merchant. You comment is accurate I am sure. We hear a lot about transparency and so on in government. I am simply trying to make the point that all of us need to live up to the same standard that we would want our children, neighbor and government to live up to. If we want to audit the Fed, then can we too live up to an audit of our own lives. I guess I am saying, “are we with charcoal on our face calling the kettle black”? Make no mistake, we do need to audit and reign in the Fed. This must be confusing or have little impact on some but the truth is that we must walk the walk. It is not enough to point out that government has waste, fraud and abuse of the system. While it is monumentally obvious this is going on, I ask why. I can only imagine because the government is really a microcosm of the face of our nation, made up of people who happen to be employed by the government. They too are looking for a handout or looking out for their self-interest just like you are. It happens in the government and it happens in our own lives. I am just asking, can we make a moral change that will eventually carry forward to the government much in the same way our immoral self has carried forward to the government. The government is a reflection of the people in our nation, not the opposite.
Does anyone know if Kent Sorenson is going to / or speaking at the Campaign for Liberty event on Friday, Sat or Sun?
