(URBANDALE, Iowa) – The Governor Branstad 2010 campaign today announced that former Gov. Terry Branstad will compete in three Republican gubernatorial primary debates.
“We welcome the opportunity to discuss the future of Iowa with our primary opponents,” said campaign manager Jeff Boeyink. “The governor looks forward to sharing his message of job creation, family income growth and restoring fiscal responsibility to the state’s budget.”
The Governor Branstad 2010 campaign has accepted an invitation to an April 7 debate to be held at KTIV studios in Sioux City. KTIV is partnering with sister stations, KWWL in Waterloo, and KTTC in Rochester, MN.
The second debate will be held in Cedar Rapids on May 1, and is sponsored by the Iowa Broadcast News Association.
The Governor Branstad 2010 campaign will also accept an invitation to participate in the traditional Des Moines Register debate in Des Moines, which is held each primary campaign.
“This will give Iowans all over the state a chance to view the Republican gubernatorial candidates, and where each stands on the issues,” said Boeyink. “We are excited to participate in these debates.”

VANDER PLAATS PLEASED BRANSTAD AGREES TO THREE DEBATES, ENCOURAGES FORMER GOVERNOR TO ACCEPT ADDITIONAL FORUMS
DES MOINES – Republican gubernatorial candidate Bob Vander Plaats issued the following statement in response to an announcement late today that former Gov. Terry Branstad has agreed to participate in three debates before the June 8 primary:
“I’m pleased Governor Branstad accepted our campaign’s Feb. 26 challenge to debate. The three debates that he has accepted are a good start, but I hope he will agree to others as the campaign progresses. I look forward to the April 7 debate in Sioux City to be sponsored by KTIV-TV, which will be broadcast by its sister stations, KWWL in Waterloo and KTTC in Rochester, Minn., as well as the Iowa Broadcast News Association debate on May 1 in Cedar Rapids and the traditional Des Moines Register/Iowa Public Television debate in Des Moines later in May.
“We proposed a minimum of four debates and I do look forward to additional forums in which Terry Branstad, Representative Rod Roberts and I will discuss the issues of importance to our state and our approaches to governing. When Representative Roberts accepted our proposal, he suggested adding a debate in Carroll and another in a similar-sized rural community in eastern Iowa. I agree wholeheartedly with his suggestion and will encourage Terry Branstad to join us.
“As I said on Feb. 26, I welcome a format in which we discuss an economic strategy to improve Iowa’s business climate and create more jobs, effectively reform our tax and regulatory structures, streamline and instill a standard of excellence in our state government, create a world-class education system, and address other important issues including the separation of powers. I’m pleased that these outstanding news organizations have stepped forward to sponsor the first three debates and hope the Branstad campaign will accept future invitations, too.”

This is good. Iowa needs this conversation. I just hope people will listen, take note and discern.
Yes, Mr. Teapublican, people will listen, take note and discern that your candidate is a bag of wind and platitudes when he has to veer off of a scripted response or his dear EO..
Teapublican: I am also going to ask you why we should vote for BVP. What are his leadership qualities that are superior to the others and what will he do differently from the other two candidates?
I look forward to hearing what Governor Vander Plaats will do when the County Recorders ignore his executive order.
chris, you’re never going to get an answer because there is none. I never get an answer to my question as to why we should vote for VP. Their campaign consists of Branstad sucks, vote for me.
And the Banstad campaign consists of, “My name is Terry Branstad…vote for me because…um..ah.. I can win”
WOW, Con Thinker, you still can’t give a reason to vote for BVP.
Deace,
Frankly, I’m not sure that I will vote for BVP. I was merely pointing out that if people believe Mr. Vander Plaats campaign is lacking in substance, than they will find Mr. Branstad’s campaign entirely devoid of it.
ConThinker: I was around during the Branstad years. He took the economy from a basket case perhaps even worse than now to a surplus. He deserves credit for that. He was governor for 16 years and kept getting reelected so the citizens of Iowa must have been satisfied.
I’ve heard him recently and it is apparent he knows what must be done. He needs a Republican majority to do it.
We know nothing about VP. So far, his campaign garnered the support he had because he was able to sell the social conservatives on the idea he was the best Christian and had the power to wave his magic pen and make gay marriage disappear.
Well, it ain’t gonna happen. He is not a better Christian than either Branstad or Roberts. At least neither Roberts nor Branstad attend a denomination that accepts homosexuality or abortion. I trust them on the issues more than BVP.
We know BFP did not do a good job with OU and his campaign so why are we supposed to expect him to do a good job with the Iowa economy? The examples are not there.
“At least neither Roberts nor Branstad attend a denomination that accepts homosexuality or abortion. I trust them on the issues more than BVP.” – Deace
So, Branstad’s a better christian because he doesn’t attend a church that belongs to a denomination that accepts homosexuality..ok. So when Branstad chooses a Lt. Governor that whole heartedly supports abortion and gay marriage that makes him a better christian? Given the fact, that he obviously believes that same person is the right choice to lead the State as Governor if he could not?
ConThinker: The lesson here is that we keep putting criteria out there that is impossible for anyone to meet. That has been my point all along. If we’re going to go by the church a candidate attends, Roberts and Branstad both attend churches that condemn abortion and homosexuality. BVP’s church’s denomination has gone so far as to bless an abortion clinic.
If BVP is the perfect “Christian”, don’t you think he would run away from such a denomination?
If deace and company want to use the criteria of who is the best Christian in order to determine who they are going to support, the evidence does not support BVP as being the best Christian.
Deace –
I doubt those like deace and company are trying to say that Mr. Vander Plaats is the best christian. In fact, if you follow a christian faith, you would know that there simply is no ‘best christian’. We all are fallen and are in need of grace. That being said, I am not here to defend Mr. Vander Plaats.
I am simply pointing out that if you believe that Branstad is running some kind of platform of ideas, you are mistaken. You yourself sum up pretty well, “He was governor for 16 years and kept getting reelected so the citizens of Iowa must have been satisfied.” Following that kind of logic, I’m sure you’ll be lining up to vote for Leonard Boswell (served for 14 years) and Tom Harkin (served for 26 years) because they have been elected over and over again, so the people of Iowa are abviously happy with them and we should all continue to vote for them.
You see, as younger person who was not around for Branstad’s governorship, I simply do not care how many times he was elected before. I want to know what he did (raised taxes and fees 30 different times, raised the sales tax some 60%, grew the size of government every single year in office) and what he says he wants to do now. And because I cannot see the future I have base my decision, to vote for his ideas, on whether or not I trust that he will do what he says. Now in my experience, when someone tells you they’re going to do something in the future, while having done the opposite in the past, its a pretty safe bet to think that they won’t follow through.
ConThinker: You don’t really believe Deace and Co. are not trying to convince the gullible among us that we need to vote for BVP because he is the best Christian in their opinion, are you?
That was the reason Huckabee got the support he got. Nevermind, he was very liberal in most his positions except abortion. His supporters had been fooled by his God words.
I believe Deace’s throwing around the Lord’s name is taking the Lord’s name in vain. I bet our Lord would just as soon these people leave him out of it.
I take it as an insult to infer I have no more intelligence than to vote for Harkin or Boswell.
At least I didn’t vote for Obama and I am not encouraging ANYONE to do anything to support or make it easy for RATS to get elected.
Deace and Co. are helping Democrats. You need to get on their case, not mine. I’m smarter than to do anything to help Dims. Your buddies aren’t and they feel morally superior.
Huge mistake for Branstad.
“Huge mistake for Branstad.”
