TebowPalinPaloozObamaTanking

TebowBGIBy Emily Geiger

So much to talk about, so little time. Let’s get started

Tebow Ad

In short, a missed opportunity. The tackling version was stupid (and no, not because it incites violence, which only stupid people would believe). The other version was okay, but could have been a little more… okay, a lot more direct.

Most of the people who saw the ad are not going to go to the Focus on the Family website to see the rest of the story as the ad instructed them to do, and so they are going to miss the best part of the story.

Their baby’s loss.

Palinpalooza Weekend

In short, a mixed bag. The Tea Party speech was fine. Lots of red meat for the hungry crowd. We’ve all probably heard about the post-speech Q & A session and the hand-notes and such. Not the greatest idea, especially given that she has to know people will criticize her for any little thing.

On the other hand, she had one of her best interviews with Chris Wallace on Fox News Sunday.

Overall, I do think she is improving substantively. If she continues that climb, she’ll be one to watch.

Obama’s Slow Decline

This guy’s presidency is like a train wreck in slow motion. You know that any second the bottom is going to fall out and he’s going to crash and burn, as slowly, more and more people realize how very bad he is for our country.

The Hotline is reporting that Obama’s approval ratings are now at a lowly 44%. Those who disapprove of his performance stand at 47%. Among independents, only 29% approve of his performance.

I’d feel bad for him if he weren’t royally screwing up our country.

I got a survey call last night asking about the Tebow ad. It was fairly obvious it came from “Hocus-Pocus on the Family” so I shouldn’t have been surprised by their questions but there was one that insenced me. They asked about religious affiliation and one of the choices was “Do you consider yourself Christian OR Catholic?” Even as a Non-Catholic I was extremely offended!!! Several of their questions were theologically flawed at best, but I guess I shouldn’t have been expected any less.

Timmy, I didn’t realize it but apparently the old evangelical protestant idea is still out there that the catholic church is Babylonian mother worship in-disguise (or somesuch). I’ve mentioned in a couple threads that back in the forties I used to hear that in my childhood church but haven’t heard it now for some years. Altho just last week I did mention that it probably can still be found in print at christian bookstores.

Anyway, my context is: Do we really want religion in our government because at least half of us really won’t like the religion that might be the one in charge.

Absolutely NOT. Supernatural belief has no place in politics. Morality always has been something tended to in homes and communities, and will always remain even *if* a religion were to be mandated by the state (thus violating the intent of the founding fathers). If the US required Islam to be practiced, I imagine most Christians wouldn’t change their views.

Again, this issue was already covered by our founding fathers, who created a wall of separation between church and the state.

“[..] I contemplate with sovereign reverence that act of the whole American people which declared that their legislature should make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof, thus building a wall of separation between church and state.”

ConDem, I’m Lutheran so I really don’t fit into either category(I guess that means I can throw rocks in both directions)!

Timmy: There are those who call themselves Lutheran and then there are real Lutherans. There’s a world of difference.

  • Deace voted for Obama wrote on 9 February, 2010, 8:19

The word “Lutheran” means as much as the word “Christian”. Neither word means much anymore.

DVFO: those that know the difference, make the difference!!!

Really? Do you mean *real* Lutherans more strictly interpret the Bible? Or do you mean that *real* Lutherans actual adhere to the teachings?

I once took a religion class in college and the teacher had everyone go around the room and say what religion they were. None of the Catholics identified themselves as “Christian.” They all said “Catholic.” I was a bit shocked by that. It almost felt as though their denomination was more important than their faith.

  • Timmy wrote on 9 February, 2010, 11:36

Jeff, I’m not sure I’m going there. DVFO made a comment and I responded. As for the differnce, you always have those that actually fill the pews every Sunday and pay attention and others that seldom darken the door ‘cept for funerals, weddings, Christmas & Easter. You’ll have that in most all denominations and that’s the difference I think that matters to me.

As far as the question posed to me last night, it genuinely pi$$ed me off!!!

Emily… I have a far different take than you. The Tebow ad I thought was EXTREMELY effective..and here’s why. It wasn’t overly preachy..but..it did the job it was intended…to send the message that every life is precious and should be celebrated.

Get this Emily…in the hour after the ad played on Sunday, the Focus on the Family website logged over 500,000 hits and over 50,000 unique visitors.

Just in the runup to the Super Bowl when the contrived controversy over this ad was playing in the media, Focus saw traffic to their website skyrocket to the point where they had to add more servers to accommodate the demand.

So, Emily…hate to say it..but I think your take is WAY off on the Tebow ad.

  • TheThinker wrote on 9 February, 2010, 12:55

    HawkCR1,

You are right on! Emily couldn’t be more wrong.

  • Waywardson wrote on 9 February, 2010, 13:25

I am going to agree with Em. I was with some not informed friends and guests, but they had all heard of the controversy and when the ad aired, they were all like “Huh? That was it?”. It could have been MUCH more direct. Don’t let the usual suspects get you down.

  • HawkCR1 wrote on 9 February, 2010, 15:54

See my previous post Wayward…the ad did EXACTLY what it was intended to do…If the ad had been “overly direct” as you and Emily think it should have…it likely would have done the opposite thing…people would have immediately tuned out the message..not even bothered to go to their website for more information later.

When you want to get people’s attention..especially on a extremely divisive issue…smacking them in the face with it with a 2×4 typically does more harm than good. Successful issue advocacy brings people in by first piquing their interest…by doing so, you’re much more likely to get people to listen with an open mind instead of coming into it with preconceived notions.
