Tea Party Conventioneers: “Run Sarah Run”

Sarah Palin BWBelow is Sarah Palin’s keynote speech to the Tea Party Convention in Nashville from last night.  Palin began her speech by saying, “I want to welcome the people watching on CSPAN, you might not have been welcome in the healthcare proceedings, but you are welcome in the Tea Party Movement.”

There is an issue much larger than tea partyers, or the other party labels, watch for it in 2010 and 2012. IS EXPERIENCE AS AN OFFICE HOLDER, A GUARANTEE OF HONESTY, INTEGRITY, IN OFFICE? Former Senator John Edwards is a telling argument which both parties often use in selecting candidates to run for the presidency. The clarion call today by both parties is seek an office holder and you’ll get true service and expertise. Really? I don’t think that’s true in all cases. The founders knew this far better than many in today’s media who look for sensationalism at most turns. A Governor from South Carolina, Senator from Nevada, Congressman from New Orleans, Governor from Illinois, the list is quite extensive and growing longer each year. That’s why founders like Abraham Baldwin, Benjamin Franklin, John Hancock and others would not be considered in 2012 for higher office by either party.

A reputation for honesty, integrity, constitutional adherence, respect for the law, deep commitment to the voters, love for the nation, wife and family, often seem to be overlooked and we foolishly elect a “leader” like John Edwards. John Edwards, a lawyer who was elected to the U.S. Senate, chosen as a Vice Presidential running mate for John Kerry, living a secret life filled with schemes and intrigue, what a disaster.

Is your elected official representing you by keeping his oaths, representing your views and upholding integrity and honesty in his life? If not, the next time you are looking for a candidate you might want to discount experience which has been imaged, and place integrity at the top of your list.

Taken from Taegan Goddards this morning:

    “In an amusing aside, Mudflats

    http://www.themudflats.net/2010/02/06/no-teleprompter-needed/

catches Palin — who mocked President Obama during her speech for using a teleprompter — looking at notes she wrote on the palm of her hand during the Q&A portion of the event.

Movements like the Tea Party have been part, but not a very important part, of our political fabric since the founding of our country. History shows us that charlatans like Palin exploit well meaning, but otherwise ignorant, xenophobic, dispossesed and god-fearing people who do not have the cognitive abilities to deal with the complexities of modern life. These poor folk tend look to false messiahs to deliver them from the misery of their of the otherwise meaningless lives. Poor saps. I watched this sad spectable unfold before me on CSPAN shaking my head in disgust as I watched Palin spew her vitriol to the seething masses before her who have yet to realize that they have all been shaken down. Despite all of this I am encouraged by the fact that moderates continue to move forward. TEB, in a workmanlike manner has disposed of BVP and his dwindling band of religious whack jobs. The newly minted Senator Brown now shows us his true moderate colors–accepting of gay unions, accepting of abortions in certain circumstances, etc. In a short time the Tea Party will implode only to be replaced by other exploiters of the ignorant. My fervant wish is to have all of the serialized on Bravo. What great entertainment.

I never have a problem with people using notes to give a speech, but I don’t think its helpful for Palin to have to look down at the notes on her hand to answer a pretty simple question.

  • Conservative Demo wrote on 7 February, 2010, 11:39

Of course you haven’t Mr Robinson, but then neither have you taken part in the several-month running ongoing ridicule of the teleprompter usage by obammer. Palin _has_. And altho I won’t sit for an hour to listen to her ramblings just to prove it to myself firsthand, those who did listen say that during her speech last night she indeed ridiculed the obammer about teleprompters, while having notes written on her palm.

Is it only demos who see her duplicity?

  • Craig Robinson wrote on 7 February, 2010, 11:53

Using notes requires formulation of thought giving your speech.

Using a teleprompter requires no thought at all because someone prepared your speech for you.

Still, this only furthers Palin’s biggest weakness.

  • Conservative Demo wrote on 7 February, 2010, 12:01

Geeze (heh-hee) you’d want to put out of business the likes of Wm Safire, Pat Buchanen, Peggy Noonan, and other good thinkers whose names escape me at the moment?

  • SharpHawkeye wrote on 7 February, 2010, 12:36

I appreciate your point, Dr. Phillips, but I think you’re guilty (as are a lot of others) of canonizing the founders. They were men, after all, and not perfect examples of the kinds of things you espouse. Franklin had a common-law marriage and an illegitimate child (who he did acknowledge, if not fully embrace).

So it’s not quite as simple as the “the founders were perfect, modern-day politicians are slime” argument you put out there.

  • HawkCR1 wrote on 7 February, 2010, 12:37

Well..considering William Safire is dead, CD..I’d say he’s already out of business.

But..I agree with Craig…using notes is one thing…reading your entire speech off of a teleprompter is another. I mean..for cryin out loud…Obama gave a speech to a sixth grade class and was using the bloody thing!

  • Conservative Demo wrote on 7 February, 2010, 13:10

Yop hcr1, Bill’s dead and Pat & Peg are onto bigger money now, which is why I was meaning their modern day counterparts when I wrote “the likes of” .
Doggone, wish it didn’t sound like I’m defending the obammer, I truly am not.

Aww heck anyway, for as much fun as we had with dubya’s command of the grammar and now with the entertainment we get every time palin talks, geece it’d be less than fair to not laugh at BO and his prompter moments. I’m with you there.

When General Eisenhower came to Iowa in his campaign for President in 1952, my Grandfather was one of the senior elected officials in the County. As such he was privileged to have been seated close enough to the podium that he saw that the General’s notes consisted of four words. When my grandfather related this to me (about fifteen years later) he could only remember one of the words, which was “taxes.”

Using sparse notes means that you know the substance of what you want to say and that you don’t need some speechwriter feeding you specific words.

  • chris wrote on 7 February, 2010, 23:39

HawkCR1: just to be precise: Obama did not use the teleprompter to talk to the 6th grade class, but to deliver his prepared remarks to the 20 reporters that were at the event. Even so, a podium and teleprompters in that setting looked silly.

    Say what?

“I have no idea how conventionally people [run for the White House]. How they open a door that perhaps isn’t even open. I don’t know how any of that stuff works. I’m just appreciative of having some good information at my fingerprints now.”

    – Sarah Palin

  • Mr. Hawk wrote on 8 February, 2010, 8:39

Nominating Sarah Palin in 2012 would be the absolute worst mistake the GOP could make.

  • Peggy wrote on 8 February, 2010, 9:05

    Con Dem,

Did you hear Barack Obama slaughter the word “corpsman” THREE TIMES in his speech last week? He’s obviously unfit to govern!

    Damn teleprompter.

  • Timmy wrote on 8 February, 2010, 9:06

I agree, but I don’t think she’s going to run anyway. She is capitalizing on her extra 15 minutes to make some bank off her fame and is wise to do so. She’ll probably always have some forum to offer her opinions and throw out red meat to fire up the “base”(like she was trying to do here), but I doubt very seriously she is as delusional as Huckabee and wouldn’t want to put her family thru another “proctology exam” like what happpened in ‘08.

  • Conservative Demo wrote on 8 February, 2010, 9:47

Peg, get the quote and put it up. Heck, these people wanna place themselves up on a stage to be heard and seen, they’re gonna hafta face the guffaws at how they manage to come across.

  • Peggy wrote on 8 February, 2010, 9:58

    “Get the quote”?

I realize you’re a Democrat and used to having other people do all the work while you reap the benefits but get it yourself.

I heard the speech/press conference live; he said “corpse-man” three times in about 30 seconds.

I’m no constitutional lawyer, but come on….maybe he should have bypassed Harvard and gone directly to Job Corpse.

    “Yes whee kan!”

  • Conservative Demo wrote on 8 February, 2010, 10:08

Peg are you hollow between the ears?

“I realize you’re a Democrat and used to having other people do all the work while you reap the benefits but get it yourself”.

Uhnn hon, the “benefit” to be reaped by putting up a dumb quote from obammy would all go to you and the repubs. I wouldn’t have asked you to put up a stupid quote from palin because I realize that laughing at her isn’t one of your fire irons.

If you don’t think the direct quote of the corpsman-whatever alleged gaffe(s) is important then don’t find it.

    Geece Peg, hurt my feelings.

  • Peggy wrote on 8 February, 2010, 10:13

No, actually, I just enjoy pointing out the absurd double standard perpetually on display by the Left.

How would the press “quote” a mis-pronounced word anyway?

You’re going to have to youtube it, Honey.

  • HawkCR1 wrote on 8 February, 2010, 10:17

Palin has proven that she doesn’t do “conventional” politics. I could see her running for President…I could see her forming a group ala Newt Gingerich…or just being content to be a national figure and helping to advance the cause in whatever way she can.

  • Conservative Demo wrote on 8 February, 2010, 10:23

Hmm yass, I’ll get right on it. Wait here willya, while I go find it.

Craig I thoroughly agree, in any speaker’s case, notes dashed on the hand or wrist, can be indicative of both a lack of planning and passion. I am a Republican and not a particular fan of President Clinton, but I do remember when during a SOTU address someone had put the wrong speech on the teleprompter. Clinton, without missing a beat, went on with the address and few knew about the mistake initially, only later was the mishap revealed by the press. If one truly feels passionate about an issue it’s important to make formal notes or have the item embedded in memory.

    - The rumor is that this also happened with Palin’s convention speech.
