Chuck Larson, Bill Salier, Phyllis Kelly, Bryan Sievers, and Kim Schmett, all endorse George Eichhorn for Iowa Secretary of State
HAMILTON COUNTY – A diverse group of Iowa conservative and Republican leaders have come forward to join and endorse George Eichhorn’s campaign for Iowa Secretary of State.
Chuck Larson, the former Cedar Rapids State Senator, State Representative, and U.S. Ambassador to Latvia, is also a former Iowa Republican Party Chairman. Bill Salier is a well known Iowa conservative leader, farmer, former Marine, and former U.S. Senate candidate. Phyllis Kelly served Iowa as the Republican Party’s National Committeewoman. Bryan Sievers was a Scott County Senator, Representative and County Republican Chairman. Kim Schmett served as Polk County Republican Chairman and was a Republican congressional candidate.
They join the already announced statewide campaign Co-Chairs Carmine Boal, a conservative leader and former Republican House Assistant Majority Leader from Polk County, State Representative Betty De Boef of Keokuk County, and former Iowa redistricting advisory commission member Lance Ehmcke of Sioux City.
“George Eichhorn served as Chairman of the Iowa Legislative Committees responsible for the Secretary of State’s budget and regulations. He understands the job and he would make an outstanding Secretary of State. I endorse and I am supporting George’s candidacy,” said Chuck Larson.
“Those of us who value liberty and the limited power of government, granted to it by the Constitution, must take an active role in this election for Secretary of State. I believe that George Eichhorn is a trustworthy man with a keen intellect who will not allow our system of election to be tampered with,” said Bill Salier.
Phyllis Kelly, Bryan Sievers and Kim Schmett’s endorsements are also being released by the campaign today.
“I intend to win this election and restore fiscal discipline to the Secretary of State’s office,” said Eichhorn, “My growing support is indication that Republican donors, party and conservative leaders recognize that I am the best candidate to do this job for the people of Iowa.”
George, whose last name is pronounced I-Corn, is a native of Davenport and a private practice attorney who has owned a law firm in Des Moines and served as a Republican State Legislator from rural Hamilton County for three terms.
He is the former Chairman of the Iowa Legislature Administrative Rules Review Committee, responsible for oversight of regulations in the Secretary of State’s office, and the former Chairman of the Administration and Regulation Appropriations Subcommittee, the committee responsible for the Secretary of State’s budget. He has been married to his wife Shelly, originally from Perry, for more than 20 years.
Eichhorn is running for Secretary of State to restore accountability in the Secretary of State’s budget, eliminate wasteful spending, and reform policies that leave the state open to elections fraud.
Say “I-Corn” for Secretary of State

Yawn. Is that the same Bill Salier who refused to endorsed the republican who throttled him in the primary for senate? And is that the same Chuck “Benedict Arnold” Larson who went to work for the Culver administration to promote his I-Jobs program? And didnt these people all support I-Corn for the last 5 races he has run for and handidly LOST? Not to mention I doubt the other people even know who else is running or even thinking about running. And Mr. Robinson, there is no such thing as a “former” Marine.
I was called a former Marine once back in ‘97. By a guy who became formerly concious.
Looks like an impressive list.
One hopes that he will amp up the enthusiasm a bit more than his last campaign!
The IFPC is waiting for Eichhorn to state whether he believes the constitution is based on the Bible before they decide who to support.
Timmy, I wonder if Eichhorn has alerted the folks over at Guiness about his losing streak in elective politics? Does anyone know what the record is for the most lost elections in Iowa?
I’d really like to let our former Sec of State know that “Iowa Needs Paul Pate”. A GOP ticket with Pate and Branstad on it would be glory days with more coattails than a tuxedo convention.
Waywardson, I agree with you about Pate. Fully. Carry On.
Reading these things makes it look like one person is writing back and forth to himself under different names to promote Pate (who probably didn’t even use computers back when he was in office – I don’t think email existed then) and attack Eichhorn. Kind of sad. George Eichhorn seems to be a consistent conservative in all regards. Pate endorsed and worked for pro-gay rights, pro-abortion, pro-higher taxes, pro-big government spending Giuliani for President.
And what exactly do ANY of those things have to do with the office of Secretary of State?
IAConservative….
Pate actually performed the Secretary of State’s duties…he knows what he’s supposed to be doing in that office…1. Conducting fair, open, and honest elections and 2. Being our state’s ambassador to new businesses and industry…two things that Mike Mauro doesn’t have a CLUE about.
I would love to know just what exactly the Iowa Secretary of State can do about abortion..does he have a magic wand he can wave and make all abortion illegal? I mean..if the Governor can wave a magic wand and make gay marriage illegal…surely the Secretary of State has one too, right IACon?
Read my other posts fool. I am nobodys doppleganger. As for Pate’s social values or perhaps the lack thereof, I stand with the above post. It has nothing to do with his office. I did not support him for governor. And I would not do so if he ran again or for federal office. But having control over fair elections is paramount to getting our preferred moral and fiscal conservatives elected to those offices. Do not cut off your nose to spite your face.
All IAConservativewins said in their post was that he supported Guiliani in the primary. I know plenty of very conservative people who backed McCain; does that make them automatically less of a conservative? If you’re going to accuse Pate of being many of those things, then cite sources where he says it himself, otherwise you’re just making things up.
And besides, as has been stated above, none of those things have anything to do with the office of Secretary of State.
“none of those things have anything to do with the office of Secretary of State.”
Besides… the ideology of the last Secretary of State never came into play anywhere else… these guys never run for higher office, so don’t worry about it. It’s all about WINNING!!
IACon…
You haven’t answered the question..just WHAT does the Secretary of State’s office have to do with those issues? JJenkins makes a very good point…there were MANY conservatives who backed McCain…does it make them less of a conservative?
What happens if Mauro wins another term? Think about it, IACon…you said it yourself..”these guys “never” run for higher office… Mauro would be the obvious choice for the Dems to run for the 3rd CD seat in the future…
You beat him now in 2010..and you put a huge crimp in those plans….
I’d like to run for local office someday, maybe even for the state legislature. I would sure feel alot more comfortable knowing that my election will be overseen by a fair minded individual and not the Polk County South Side mafia. Besides, Pate had a 100% pro-life voting record in the Iowa Senate, not that it matters.
I realize that it’s politics but sheesh, how for do you want to take this? I mean, if the local candidate for County Recorder doesn’t march in lock-step with IFPC then is he/she not “‘pure enough” to hold office as a Republican? Keep this up and you won’t have to wonder about another 4 years of Chet & the dems!
I love how this article is about Eichhorn but everyone is talking about how Pate is the best candidate. Is he running or what?
Cletus – you make a good point. It seems that a bunch of the party leadership and conservative leadership is lining up behind Eichhorn, who has the most recent relevant experience with the present day Secretary of State’s office. As I mentioned before, when Pate was there email didn’t even exist or was in its infancy. Eichhorn has the background, from heading up both the major committees over the SOS to understand the modern office.
In fact, with Chuck Larson from Pate’s own backyard endorsing Eichhorn that probably sends a pretty powerful message.
IAConservativeWins: Are you Eichhorn? If you are, you would know that serving on a committee that discusses an office is not the equivelnt of holding that office. You and I discuss this race, but niether of us “bloggers” are qualified to hold the office. As for Larson, he made a great deal of enemies amonst us conservatives when he sold out to go work for the Cuvler Administration alonside fmr Vilsack COS Joe Shanahan. I don’t think anybody aside from George himself is too concerned with who a Chet Culver Administration official suggests we support in a REPUBLICAN primary. And Larson lives in West Des Moines. Pate is a proven winner. Eichorn has gone to great lengths to prove that he cannot win ANYTHING. Hell, even that kid from Pottawattomie is a better option than I-Cornholio. At least he won a local election for city council.
Snow: You nailed it on Larson and his sell out with Culver and Vilsack. Let us NOT forget that.
IA Conservative says: Besides… the ideology of the last Secretary of State never came into play anywhere else… these guys never run for higher office, so don’t worry about it. It’s all about WINNING!!
Well then by all means, when that person runs for a higher office where those views would matter and their views didn’t line up with yours, then support their primary opponent! After all, that 100% pro life senate rating clearly indicates that Pate is a liberal.
