Earlier today Des Moines Register reporter Jason Clayworth wrote a blog post that has been removed from the Register’s website. My trustworthy staff of researches saved me a copy of what he wrote so I can share it with you.
Here is what Clayworth wrote:
Pictures of a shirtless Chet Culver?
Pictures of the triathlon that Gov. Chet Culver participated in last weekend have been posted online. While the pictures do not include detailed descriptions, it appears that Culver wore a yellow cap while swimming. In another picture, he’s standing shirtless before the bike portion. Culver completed the Boy Ranch Triathlon in Florida in 3:03:27.
Troy Price, a spokesman for the governor, said he wasn’t sure if these pictures are the governor. However, from the pictures, it doesn’t appear that many participants were of the governor’s build. The pictures are posted on the StateOfMindSports.net web site. You decide if the guy with the yellow cap is the governor.
Look, not only did the Governor participate in the triathlon, but they told the media about it almost a month ago. That means photos and accounts of the event are fair game. Would the Register pull a blog post down if Clayworth would have posted pictures of a shirtless Terry Branstad or Chris Rants? Or are they simply protecting Governor Culver?
Additionally, Kathie Obradovich writes about Ryan Reynolds abs all of the time.
Update: So the story is that Erin Siedler, the Governor’s new communications director, sent an email to Jason Clayworth telling him that until he removed the story from the Register’s website that the Governor’s office would not respond to any official requests by the Des Moines Register.
The outrageous thing is that the Governor’s office obviously sent a press release and photo of the event out, and we know they leaked the fact that Culver was going to participate in the event, and now they are pissed at a friendly reporter blogging “unauthorized” (yet public) photos of the same event?
A Republican would be crucified in the press for this…..
Here are the photos that Culver’s campaign and the Des Moines Register doesn’t want you to see.

Krusty’s campaign slogan for Republicans in 2010 should be
“Vote Republican, We cut the fat out of government, including our Candidates!” Good Job researching the most important story so far this month krusty. I really needed to know about Governor Culver’s weight problem. Hey, next, find which restaurant he prefers: Jesse Embers or 801 Steakouse. You could be his personal Papparazzi!!!
Oh my God – Chet Culver is fat! We’ve found our winning issue!!!
No,, kidding. The guy screwed up the state. Who cares how fat (or skinny) he is. We have fat Republicans, too. Let’s move on to something substantive.
Troy, get back to work. I need that press release.
Gee thanks?
I could have gone… forever without seeing those.
Number one, just how many of the rest of us could do a triathalon? Having said that, I really didn’t need to see these pix. You really can’t un-ring that bell!!!
Culver and his staff want it both ways with the media and gay marriage. OH!
Obviously a stress eater. Many of us are. Didn’t he sign the Healthy Kids Act? And what about Patty Judge’s 12 week fitness program this summer? And what about “Lighten Up Iowa”? This job just isn’t for him.
I could care less what Culver does on his days off. It’s what he does behind the Governor’s desk that concerns me. DVFO is right.
I agree with DVFO, I don’t care what Culver looks like. But the time that he took to train for this triathlon could have been time spent solving our states economic ills. The time that he spent in Florida could have been time spent rectifying all the scandals he has gotten the state into. Whoever is the eventual nominee is should use this little episode to illustrate just where Culver’s priorities lie.
By voting Culver out of office, we will be doing both Culver and the state of Iowa a favor. Iowa will have a chance to get it’s financial ship up righted and Culver can move to FL, a state he loves. There’s nothing wrong with this and who can blame him for wanting to flee Iowa’s high taxes for the no-income tax state of FL.
Speaking of disappearing blog posts, what happened to Krusty’s piece that called Joy Corning “zany” and a crazy old lady? I found the one saying Joy Corning, you’re an idiot, and another one referencing the robocalls, but I think Krusty posted something else on the issue last Thursday or Friday that doesn’t seem to be on this site anymore.
Anyone have a link?
I’ve done triathlons and I honestly don’t believe that Gov Culver swam 1500 Meters in 19 minutes. I would say the average for a really good, highly trained triathlete is 20-25 minutes. The olympic record is 15 minutes. I’ve got to say “flip your cards” cuz I’m calling a bluff.
I’m Batman!
DMD,
Why is it that when Steve King does robocalls they’re bad but when Joy Corning does them, you don’t blog about it at all?
What is the order of events in a triathlon? Swim, bike, run?
Peggy – you should probably google that while youre at your computer rather than looking stupid. Swim, bike, run is correct.
Thanks for the insult, Bruce.
I just wanted to make sure that first picture of Chet entering the water with all those obviously much fitter folks was legit.
BTW, the guy in the second picture (bike portion) isn’t the same guy who’s wearing the yellow swimming cap in the other picture.
WOW! How did he ever finish? I think it’s funny that this has become the most viewed article on this site in a matter of hours. People must be linking to this article from everywhere.
17,000-plus views is unreal! What are these folks looking for?
Here’s what I want to know. Isn’t the Culver Administration threatening to withhold information and not respond to “official requests” for information from a news organization illegal?
Isn’t this a violation of Iowa’s open records laws?
Of course, the Register can get it’s lawyers to fight that, but given the horrific financial position of the Register right now, we all know they can’t afford to fight that. The Culver administration knows this, so isn’t their conditional threat essentially extortion?
Seriously, this is something the state ombudsmans/auditor/attorney general should be looking into.
Peggy,
It has over 17,000 views because everyone is looking for something better than a disrespectful Kent Sorenson ego filled piece. Everyone wants to learn that there is now way Chet Culver can swim a 19 min 1500 M!
“disrespectful Kent Sorenson ego filled piece” — Batman
Whatever.
Who is the other imposing fellow, competitor #109? Looks as though he and Chet started out as a team….let’s see if any of the journalists at the DMR can tell us, if they’re not too afraid.
Peggy, as it happens I have a post in progress about the Joy Corning robocalls. Just haven’t had a chance to finish it yet. Maybe by tomorrow.
Robocalls are neither good nor bad in themselves–it’s the content that matters. I don’t object to advocacy groups using robocalls to identify supporters as long as they are not “push-polling” with lies. This kind of call is fair game: “Hi, this is Steve King, press 1 if you agree with me that marriage is between one man and one woman.”
Push-polling with lies? How was Steve King and NOM guilty of this?
Holy cow! The view tally on this story reminds me of the national debt clock.
Who is Matthew Thornton?
Lotsa steaks under dude’s belt, but give dude credit for one last gasp effort to achieve physical fitness. Lots of us have no room to mouth off…
