He won't be competing with Christian Fong for the lieutenant governor spot, that's for sure. Branstad has no good answer for this kind of criticism. It's why then State Auditor Richard Johnson and various Republican state legislators endorsed Fred Grandy during the 1994 primary. Typically the whole political establishment unites around the incumbent when there is a primary challenge.
