Every Governor goes around talking about how many jobs he has created. Some actually do focus on economic development and create an environment where private companies can thrive and create new jobs. Then there are Governor’s like Chet Culver. Culver thinks that jobs are created when we repave the street in front of my house or put in a new sewer line. Sure it takes someone to build it, but it doesn’t create any full time permanent jobs. If you don’t believe me, just pop open the manhole cover and go down there and look for the dude working in that sewer line.
I would not be telling the truth if I didn’t admit that Culver hasn’t created any private sector jobs. He is staffing up for his re-election campaign. Unfortunately, if you are an Iowa political operative you need not apply. Instead of putting Iowans back to work, Culver is filling positions with out of state political hacks.
Yesterday Culver announced that he has hired Andrew Roos from South Bend, Indiana to manage his re-election campaign. This is a perfect hire for the Big Lug. Roos was a tutor for the Athletic Department at Notre Dame. He helped student athletes develop better analytic and writing skills, working with individuals and groups in philosophy, economics and political science. God knows Chet needs all the help he can get with economics…
Roos was the campaign manager for Jack Markell’s winning gubernatorial campaign in Delaware in 2008. A lot of media outlets point out that Roos led Markell’s come-from-behind effort, but to my knowledge, Republicans were not heavily invested in the Delaware race because they knew it was going to be a difficult state to win.
Roos also managed Brian Moran’s gubernatorial campaign in Virginia. Moran finished third in a three-way race with only 24% of the vote. I’m told that if he runs Culver’s campaign like he did Brian Moran’s, then you will see true incompetence. Moran’s campaign was a complete disaster, the worst campaign some have seen in three cycles. Wow, nice hire Chet!
Another thing that probably drew Culver to Roos is his love a “plan.” You remember Chet’s notebook that said “Culver Plan” on it from the 2006 campaign. We never really knew what was really in it, but darn it, he had a plan. Watch Roos talk about how important Markell’s plan was to their victory in 2008. I guess we should get ready to see that old Culver notebook again.
Is Roos and Culver a match made in heaven, or is this the best a Governor who’s in the tank can get?

Ok, so let me get this straight. Chet hired a guy who ran a congressional… uh, I mean a gubernatorial campaign in Delaware where their U.S. Senator was Barack Obama’s VP nominee… THEN ran a third place congressional campaign in VA? Sounds like a proven winner to me. Maybe he can get Chet to shave off some dead weight while he’s at it – good hire, Chet. See you at the finish line.
