It’s a Man’s World: Letterman Attacks Palin… Willow Palin

By Emily Geiger

I find it funny that when conservative women start treading on men’s turf, it’s liberals who start attacking in a highly sexist manner.

The latest in this ongoing saga involves some hugely inappropriate comments made by David Letterman about Sarah Palin… and her 14-year-old daughter.

Letterman’s recent comments have included a statement that Palin was in New York shopping to perfect her “slutty stewardess look.” I mean, really, doesn’t Dave know how politically incorrect that is? They’re now called “flight attendants.”

But seriously, can you imagine the uproar if Ann Coulter or Rush Limbaugh had commented on Michelle Obama’s often sleeveless style by calling it “slutty?” I don’t think I’ve ever seen Palin flash as much skin as Michelle, but I guess there must be a double standard there.

How about sex jokes about the Obama girls? Would that be over the top? Of course it would. But apparently that standard doesn’t apply to jokes made by Letterman about Palin’s 14-year-old daughter.

Letterman recently joked in his opening monologue that Palin visited Yankee Stadium, sitting in “far, far right field” with Rudy Giuliani. “They had a wonderful time,” he continued. “The toughest part of her visit was keeping Eliot Spitzer away from her daughter.”

Letterman also commented that it must have been “awkward” when, during the seventh inning stretch, Palin’s daughter got “knocked up by Alex Rodriguez.”

Letterman now claims that he was referring 18-year-old Bristol Palin (who was home in Alaska with her baby). However, only 14-year-old Willow Palin accompanied the governor to the baseball game.

Palin has responded with the following:

“Concerning Letterman’s comments about my young daughter (and I doubt he’d ever dare make such comments about anyone else’s daughter): ‘Laughter incited by sexually-perverted comments made by a 62-year-old male celebrity aimed at a 14-year-old girl is not only disgusting, but it reminds us some Hollywood/NY entertainers have a long way to go in understanding what the rest of America understands – that acceptance of inappropriate sexual comments about an underage girl, who could be anyone’s daughter, contributes to the atrociously high rate of sexual exploitation of minors by older men who use and abuse others.’”

I think this is an excellent point. I have written before about the over-sexualization of young lettermangirl1girls in our culture today. What Letterman said was appalling, no matter which daughter he was talking about. You don’t talk about any woman that way, especially if the only reason you are doing it is because you don’t like her mother.

Don Imus got fired for calling some young women (who were approximately 18-23 years of age) “knappy-headed hos.” I know there are racial connotations to those remarks, but isn’t it also outrageous to make hateful sexual comments about a person because of their political and religious beliefs? Or their parents’ political and religious beliefs?

I find Letterman’s excuse ridiculous. Does he wait around outside the high schools so that when a girl turns 18, he can give her the verbal equivalent of pelvic exam? ‘Cause it’s okay now when it wasn’t okay yesterday?

Letterman’s comments evidence an underlying lack of respect for women. He should apologize for that instead of making excuses and trying to justify making sex jokes about a child of the governor.

But, hey, we all know about Letterman’s pervy side. He just proved it yet again.

Speaking of slutty looks, did anyone see how the First Lady of the US represented us at Westminster Abby in London? If you haven’t seen it, start googling.

  • Peggy wrote on 11 June, 2009, 7:26

I’d hardly call that slutty. Cheesy, tasteless and low class are more like it. It’s hideous!

  • Conservative Demo wrote on 11 June, 2009, 7:29

Letterman _is_ funny, like it or lump it.

If you don’t like Letterman et-al on late-night TV, go to bed or watch TBN.

  • HawkCR1 wrote on 11 June, 2009, 7:37

If Letterman was so funny Conservative…why then has he been lagging behind the Tonight Show for years?

If Letterman had any class…he’d man up and apologize. Hell even Jon Stewart had the guts to apologize a couple of weeks ago when he called Harry Truman a “war criminal”.

Apparently, Letterman thinks its fair game to take crude pot shots at 14 year old girls. You stay classy there, David Letterman.

  • Peggy wrote on 11 June, 2009, 7:46

I don’t know what his ratings are but I’d bet good money he’s dead last in the race among the three major network late night shows.

I used to watch Letterman religiously in high school and beyond but he has turned into such an ass in recent years.

HIs bias and nastiness are a total turn-off. The thought of tuning into his show doesn’t even cross my mind anymore. Conan, Leno and Fallon obliterate him.

  • Timmy wrote on 11 June, 2009, 8:12

Con Dem, Letterman USED to be funny. However, the comments he made about the Palin’s daughter were a cheap shot. I don’t advocate censoring him, let the network and his sponsors decide that(after all, they pay his salary). I haven’t seen much of his show for years, I think it is sad considering how genuinely funny his show was back in the 1980’s.

were we this “upset” when Rush Limbaugh called Chelsey Clinton a dog ? nope. who cares ? they are paid to entertain , so that’s what they do. we all know there is a price to pay when you enter the spotlight, good and bad. this seems to be an attempt by Emily to stir up trouble where none exists….

The Chelsea thing was inappropriate, but this attack against the Palins rises to a whole new level of sliminess.

You are now making jokes about children having sex. That’s just not funny. And it’s sick.

And I think the fact that Letterman can’t even really admit that he was wrong is disturbing. His “apology” last night was no apology at all, just a ploy for more cheap laughs at the expense of children.

  • SharpHawkeye wrote on 11 June, 2009, 9:03

    Exactly, Lobo.

Remember McCain’s old joke about Janet Reno being Chelsea Clinton’s dad? Or “How do we beat the bitch?” Or even worse, what about when Rush Limbaugh mocked and ridiculed Michael J. Fox for having Parkinsons?

I guess political correctness and good taste only count when conservatives are the ones being attacked.

  • Thinking wrote on 11 June, 2009, 9:09

Wait, wait, wait. Back up the train! Janet Reno isn’t 14!!! (I know, I know, he was actually talking about A-Rod having sex with the 18 year old during the seventh inning though she wasn’t at the game.) And Bill Clinton did sleep around (any arguments there???), so the joke was a reasonable accusation. But no, I still don’t condone that sort of joke. And with Michael J. Fox, he publicly stated that he quit taking his pills to make his symptoms more noticeable, thus gaining sympathy for his cause. As sharp as you are, be careful when comparing apples to oranges.

  • Harry wrote on 11 June, 2009, 9:18

I love crass, crude humor. Most jokes are funny. But a joke about A-Rod raping Willow Palin? Really? That was just dumb on Letterman’s part. Now Dave is making it worse by saying he meant Bristol Palin, who was not even at the game. Idiot. Imagine Ann Coulter or Rush Limbaugh making a joke about someone having sex (which with a child is called rape) with one or both of Obama’s daughters? People would be rioting in the streets with outrage.

  • Mike C wrote on 11 June, 2009, 9:43

“And Bill Clinton did sleep around (any arguments there???), so the joke was a reasonable accusation.” – Because Bill slept around, it was okay to make fun of his daughter? It was reasonable to suggest that Janet Reno was her dad? Is that a joke, Thinking? If so, HAR HAR!

  • Thinking wrote on 11 June, 2009, 9:53

It was a lot more “reasonable” to suggest Bill Clinton had sexual relations with someone he worked with, than it was to accuse a 14 year old of getting raped by a baseball player. Funny, no. Reasonable, maybe. Different issues, yes.

By the way, I didn’t say anything about Chelsea, or suggest that it was okay to make fun of his daughter.

  • Lydia wrote on 11 June, 2009, 10:18

Nobody ever made jokes about Chelsea having sex with anyone, unlike the Palin girls who have had to endure several of those sorts of sick jokes, including implications of incest with their dad.

Everyone can be juvenile at times, but this is a new low, and yes, it is the liberals who have taken us there by attacking this conseravtive family.

  • HawkCR1 wrote on 11 June, 2009, 11:28

Ya know..I find it really sad that you liberals are somehow trying to defend the indefensible here.

This isnt a matter of “political correctness”. Most reasonable people can pretty much agree that making a joke about a professional baseball player “knocking up” a 14 year old is pretty inappropriate…

Letterman gave a half hearted apology during his show taping today..then in a pretty sad attempt to boost his ratings..invited the Palin’s to be his guests on the show. The Palin’s have rejected the invite.

Nice try David.. Why dont you try to actually be funny again.

  • LoboSolo wrote on 11 June, 2009, 11:31

i think you screwballs are getting upset over nothing. lets be honest, Palin already had a teen daughter who was pregnant out of wedlock. that is what made the basis of the joke. admittedly its was a bad joke and in poor taste. but lets stop trying to feign outrage and get back on track.
    focus people, focus.

  • HawkCR1 wrote on 11 June, 2009, 11:41

Lobo….what if someone joked bout someone knocking up your 14 year old daughter? You wouldn’t find it very funny. Letterman can sit there and say “oh I didnt know Willow was the one who was at the game”…..so wouldn’t it make sense to maybe not even say the joke at all?

Letterman’s made it clear since the election last year he doesn’t think very highly of Sarah Palin or her family…that joke the other night however crossed the line from parody into a sad display of personal vindictiveness..

  • Silence Dogood wrote on 11 June, 2009, 12:33

Children, is letterman on past your bedtimes???? Besides, the joke was about bristol palin, and he did apologize and called it in poor taste, happens to lots of comedians, as for the joke about sarah, I have heard lots of people say she looks like a flight attendant. Plus, she has no problem usually her looks when it is too her advantage, so I think her looks are fair game.

    Silence

PS, Michelle has more class and taste in her pinky than sarah palin will ever have.

  • Thinking wrote on 11 June, 2009, 12:43

    Silence,

Regardless of political persuasion, how does Michelle have more class than Sarah Palin? Politics will never change with garbage statements like that. I’m not a Palin fan, but that’s a stupid comment, plain and simple.

Just because “lots of people” say she looks like a flight attendant, Letterman is allowed to call her a slut on national television? Great argument! Let me guess, you are from the party that cares about people “after they are born.”

How was the joke about Bristol Palin? The joke would not have any basis if the daughter was not at the game? He was clearly referring to the daughter at the game. Yeah, the 14 year old. But let me guess, you are from the party that cares about people…

  • Thinking wrote on 11 June, 2009, 12:51

“Don’t you see? He’d never condone statutorily raping a girl who’s underage. All he meant to do was goof on the idea that Palin’s eldest daughter, a single mother with a baby, is a whore.”

  • Silence Dogood wrote on 11 June, 2009, 13:30

Thinking, I don’t know, he was talking about a pregnant daughter, who was pregnant , Bristol. I still really wouldn’t say it was in good taste, because I don’t think politician’s kids should be mad light of in that manner. I said the slut comment is fair game because ms. palin will use her sexuality to her advantage, that makes it fair game. The class statement is just a fact. I really have no idea how that can be disputed.

    Silence

  • Thinking wrote on 11 June, 2009, 13:38

“I really have no idea how that can be disputed”…or justified…

Is Palin different than Mrs. Obama, absolutely. Does she have less class because she was raised differently, has different views, and speaks plainly? Or just because you don’t like her? Give an example of Palin lacking class…

  • HawkCR1 wrote on 11 June, 2009, 14:01

    Silence…

Your idiotic statement that Michelle Obama has more “class” than Sarah Palin and defending Letterman’s crassness only proves that you have no class or respect.

So you’ve heard people say Palin looks like a “flight attendant”…guess you must think that all flight attendants are apparently “slutty”, right? Sounds like you liked the joke about A-Rod “knocking up” Willow Palin, too. Nice. We at least now you think that its okay to joke about sex with minors.

I’d love for you to name ONE occasion when Sarah Palin has used “looks” or “sexuality” to her advantage….try hard, because you wont find any.

OH and you say that that class statement can’t be disputed… Hmm… I seem to remember the following statement by Mrs Obama while on the trail…

“For the first time in my adult lifetime, I am really proud of my country,” “and not just because Barack has done well, but because I think people are hungry for change.”

If ya ask me…..a narcissistic and self-centered statement like that is all we need to judge who has more class..

  • Silence Dogood wrote on 11 June, 2009, 14:42

Oh Hawk, I think I have struck a cord, did I insult your dream girl, actually I didn’t insult her. Let’s see, how about how she let people yell inflammatory things at her rallies, like obama is a muslim, and kill him, didn’t stop it, just smiled and kept going. (for thinking, here is your example) Hawk, go back and reread what i said, I said it was about Bristol and was still out of line. Unless you want to actually respond to what i say, don’t bother.

    Silence

  • HawkCR1 wrote on 11 June, 2009, 15:19

So.. Sarah Palin’s to blame for people saying “Obama is a Muslim” and “kill him”…. Yeah..she just has this overwhelming power to make people do that…

Here’s your problem, Silence… Letterman had previously stated that he didn’t know which of Palin’s daughters attended the Yankees game with her…. So keep on trying to make excuses for him….the fact of the matter is, Letterman made a vicious, crude attack on Palin’s daughter.

  • Conservative Demo wrote on 11 June, 2009, 15:27

HCR1 sed:”….the fact of the matter is, Letterman made a vicious, crude attack on Palin’s daughter”

    Well yeah . . . . . but is it worth a day’s worth of anger?

One crude late-night celebrity’s writer messed up on a fact-check about a family member of another celebrity.

Those stories about someone yelling “kill him” were lies.

  • Silence Dogood wrote on 11 June, 2009, 16:49

Deace, not lies, they were on news stations audio. We can add the members showing up with stuffed monkeys and waving them around in full view of miss palin. The muslims comments. At least McCain had the class to put a stop to it at his rallies. Silence

  • Deace voted for Obama wrote on 11 June, 2009, 17:14

I think I will take the word of the Secret Service rather than a partisan Democrat.

You know, I hear “lots of people” say that Silence Dogood likes to perform sex acts on farm animals.
So, like, you know……..”lots of people” isn’t exactly a verifiable source.
