Doug’s Candidate is… Teresa Wahlert.

When you are trying to figure out what Doug Gross is up to, one should never stray too far from the tree. The tree in this case is Marvin Pomerantz who passed away last year, but the apple in Doug’s eye is none other than Teresa Wahlert, the COO of Mid-American Group, the company which Pomerantz built.

Pomerantz obviously thought highly enough of Wahlert that he gave her the reins of his company, but he also saw that she served on the Iowa Board of Regents, something that he did on a couple of occasions. It should come to no surprise that Wahlert was present at Doug Gross’ big-wig briefing of his poll a few months ago. I’m also told that Wahlert huddled with her family recently to talk about her running for gubernatorial campaign.

Gross and his allies (the mods)always tell us (the conservative, principled Republicans) that, to get elected, Republicans can’t lead with certain issues, and should instead focus on building a “big tent” around the fiscal issues. That strategy is fine when your candidate or nominee is a proven commodity, but it’s totally different when you are being asked to support a candidate you don’t know, and who has never made a vote in his/her life.

So who is Teresa Wahlert:

COO of Mid-American Group – Marvin Pomerantz’ company
Member of the Iowa Board of Regents 2005-2007
President and CEO of the Greater Des Moines Partnership – Liberal Group (trust me)
Executive at QWEST – Telecommunications Company

Education: Master of Science in Business as a Sloan Fellow at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). She also holds a Master in Business Administration from Creighton University and a Bachelor of Science in Mathematics from St. Mary’s at Notre Dame.

Is she qualified to be Governor? Yes.

Is she qualified to be the Republican nominee for Governor? Hell No.

Let me explain by starting with the obvious…

She gave $2300 (the maximum amount allowed under law) to Tom Vilsack’s campaign from president.

She gave $5000 to Chet Culver’s campaign for Governor.

She gave $25,000 to Heartland PAC on June 20, 2006
. Heartland PAC was Tom Vilsack’s way to give massive amounts of money to legislative candidates. After Culver won the Democratic Primary in 2006, Heartland PAC contributed $100,000 to his campaign. Heartland PAC also gives to Democratic legislative candidates.

So… If you are a Republican primary voter or activists and Teresa Whalert comes to your town to talk about the fiscal issues, ask her why the hell should I vote for her when she has been supplying your enemy (Culver and Iowa Dems) with bullets (money) so they can shoot at you?

I’m sorry, I will listen to people when they want to talk strategy, but if they just want me to hold my nose and expect me to vote for a liberal who has supported Chet Culver over Jim Nussle just four years ago, forget about it. I mean seriously, wouldn’t someone of Doug’s stature and campaign experience see how difficult it would be to get basically to get a liberal Republican like Wahlert through a Republican primary? Actually, I think he does understand that, but all Doug has left is the same old tree that has provided him with shade, protection, and the ability to climb to heights he couldn’t reach on his own.

The problem is that the trunk of the tree is dead and rotted wood. There is no way it can support the heavy fruit on its branches anymore. It is likely that this is just Doug’s last foray up the trunk of the tree before it falls to the ground.

Doug’s true colors are shining through, and it’s blue, not red. Well maybe it’s blue/green if you know what I mean.

Do you really think Rants has a chance? We need change in gubernatorial candidates – it’s time that we find someone like Teresa Wahlert. Give her a chance – trust me krusty – you did not go to MIT.

This is beyond stupid. He must believe in Santa Claus, too. Does he think we’re this desperate for a candidate. There’s more to the story than this. Gross isn’t this dumb.

Where do I send my contribution for Lamberti? I can accept any of the present candidates but not Ms Wahlert. She isn’t even a Republican.

  • kaiser sose wrote on 8 June, 2009, 10:36

Trust me Deace, you did not go to MIT either. Wahlert, Lamberti are good choices to consider. Keep an open mind. Rants and BVP make my blood boil if I even imagine the farrrrrrrrrrrrrrr out remote possibility of them even being our nominee.

Thanks for the info. Krusty. I’ll help ensure that she will never be our nominee. How many defeated RINOs does it take for them to learn their lession?

  • Iowans Rock wrote on 8 June, 2009, 12:02

By the way, I didn’t go to MIT either. Shocker.

I didn’t go to MIT either. They did recruit me, but when I saw the tuition figures for ONE semester at MIT were about equal to what you paid for an entire FOUR YEARS of in-state tuition at Iowa State, I made a quick economic decision & went with the degree that didn’t leave me mired in debt. I guess that means that my high school economic education was a little better than what kids are learning today.

Of course, spending that money at MIT would be one hell of a lot better than giving it to Vilsack or Culver. I sure hope this is some sort of early trial balloon by Mr. Gross, because this sort of thing sure as hell isn’t going to fly in the primary.

See, Krusty doesn’t want to tell you the whole story. He doesn’t tell you that Wahlert also gave $2000 to Jeff Lamberti and $2300 to Mitt Romney. He doesn’t tell you that the Heartland PAC gave $5000 dollars to House Republicans [versus $7000 for Democrats] and $18,500 to Senate Republicans [versus just $9000 for Democrats] and that the Heartland PAC gave $5000 each to Mitch McConnell and Norm Coleman.

To continue Krusty’s tree analogy, Krusty wants you to burn down the orchard because some of the apples are a little spotty. Give Wahlert a fair hearing.

I don’t have as much of a problem with her contributions to Democrats as I do with her direct contributions to Vilsack and Culver. For her to now wish to be the nominee of the party that stood in opposition to these two clowns………I think the word I’m looking for here is “chutzpah”. I’m sure she’s a good person and can contribute her skills to the Republican party, but why not leave the top of the ticket to someone who DIDN’T make campaign contributions to their probable 2010 gubernatorial opponent in the last election?

Is it too darn much to ask that Iowa Repuiblicans get a gubernatorial candidate who didn’t give thousands of dollars to Democratic candidates in the last few elections?

And BVP? Well, using the “Deace Rule”, he’s a RINO and undeserving of my vote. You DO remember who was on the top of the ticket with prospective Lt. Governor VanderPlaats during the last election, right? BVP worked the state hard to get Nussle elected governor, and now we’re all supposed to forget it and pretend it never happened? I don’t think so.

Never heard of this Wahlert babe and I think we can find someone suitable that we know is a Republican. Let her run against Culver in the Democrat primary.

  • HawkCR1 wrote on 8 June, 2009, 14:16

Look everyone.. Wahlert gave 2300 to Vilsack..and then 5000 to CULVER….and you want to actually consider this person to be the GOP nominee??

We saw this out in the 2nd District last year…name Peter Teahen ring a bell to anyone?? Dude gave money to Mike Blouin and radical pro-choicer Julie Thomas…and then tried making himself out to be some big conservative pro-life mainstream conservative….didn’t work out to well for him…

Sharp..I don’t need to give a “fair hearing”..all the evidence a person needs is in those two donations right there. If you want to be a part of the GOP team..then actually have a history of being a part of the team in the first damn place.
