“You’re hearing the same partisan rhetoric from the Republicans whether it’s their chairman or the Republican leaders. It’s doom. It’s gloom. It’s despair. The Democrats are the party of hope and opportunity.” Governor Chet Culver – May 29, 2009 on Iowa Press
It’s not doom and gloom Governor, it called reality.
GM and Chrysler are closing dealerships in Iowa.
Principal Financial Group is letting go 140 Iowans.
John Deere whacked 700 jobs, most of them in Ottumwa.
The University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics is making cuts.
The list could go on and on.
What have Governor Culver and the Democrats done to help these people? Nothing.
Culver borrowed $830 million; money that he believes will help pull the state out of this bad economy. All that Culver’s bonding plan will do is create some temporary construction jobs. I’m sure those who lost their jobs at UIHC and Principal are lining up to go work on the road crew this summer.
Culver also used the majority of the federal stimulus money to back fill his budget. That means all it really did was prevent the state of Iowa from cutting employees. So while big government stays fat and happy, the private sector worker is screwed.
Oh wait, I’m sorry. I did hear on the radio that people who file for unemployment benefits will see an increase of $13 to $16 in their weekly checks. That will make a difference; such an influx of money will allow them to buy two packs of cigs at the current rate.
Culver and the Democrats did nothing to help Iowa based employers this past legislative session. Small business is the engine that drives this state, so it comes as no surprise that when they struggle, even the big titans like Deere and Principal struggle in this economy.
Iowa Republicans are not playing partisan politics when they talk about our dire economy, they are simply talking about the reality that we are in today. It’s unfortunate that Culver has no grasp on reality.

Couldn’t agree more Krusty. Debt Culver on the way out!
If we can’t beat these guys in 2010, we should probably hang it up and call it a day! Sheesh, what has he been smoking?
It’s hard to believe that we even have to point out to the voters of Iowa the total mess Culver and the Democrats have made of this state.
Their only solution to these problems is to raise taxes and they’re plotting how to do it.
Republicans need to run for office on a platform of trying to emulate those states who are proving they know how to do it right.
Run on a platform of eliminating the state income tax and reducing regulations on business and stand back and see what would happen.
Of course government workers are going to have to go. We cannot afford the size of government we are forced to support.
Culver, Gronstal, Murphy, & Co are only going to make this bad situation worse and Auditor Vaudt and the legislative Republicans have been sounding the alarm. It’s time to throw out the economic illiterates and replace them with those who have identified the problem and are willing to do the heavy lifting to fix it.
Chet now has a new problem facing him… Today the Des Moines Register dared to print a Jason Clayworth story on their website with the byline “Culver MISSTATES State Revenues”….however I’m sure after Chet’s office called to chew out the DMR..they quickly changed the byline to “State Revenues Dips $90 Million”.
Chet keeps digging the hole for himself deeper and deeper by essentially saying “there’s nothing wrong..nothing to see here..move along..move along”
When the state next month goes into illegal deficit spending because the state revenues continue to drop..what’s Chet’s excuse going to be then?
Hopefully RPI and whomever our candidate for Governor will be will have plenty of commercials in the can, ready to go with Chet and Gronstal talking about how everything is all hunky dory.
Hammer the hell out of them with Gronstal’s “There is no deficit…There is NONE” tantrum he had over at the DMR.
