He showed great fortitude as Minority Leader. Republicans are in good shape. There isn't a one of these guys that isn't far superior to Big Spender Culver. The problem is which one do we choose. He's one of just a few potential candidates thus far who doesn't come out of NW Iowa. The more "hometown" candidates you get in that area, the greater the chance of splitting the vote. McKinley would pretty much have the south/south-central area to himself. And for what it's worth, there are republicans that live in other parts of the state than the Northwest corner, you know. In my mind, McKinley's best fit is to play sort of a Dick Cheney or Joe Biden role: playing elder statesman and ticket-balancer to a younger candidate. I'm not sure he has the star-power to fill the top of the ticket, but he would make a great Lieutenant Gov. candidate. McKinley has a geographical advantage, not a disadvantage.
