Furious and Fast

All through the weekend, the only political item people talked about was gay marriage. No federal deductibility, no talk of the economy, just gay marriage.

For those of you who actually believe elections can be won solely by talking about fiscal issues, the furor over this issue proves you couldn’t be more wrong. Do fiscal issues matter to folks? Absolutely. But you can’t win an election without talking about social issues.

The year 2010 will be here before you know it. We will be talking about gay marriage and other social issues for one reason and one reason only – liberals have gone way too far, way too fast.

Many of you probably have had the same conversations as I have the past few months. Many Republicans are hoping liberals do go too far so the American people wake up and realize what Democrats stand for. Gay marriage is a prime example of going too far.

Of course there is one man in Iowa who can save the Democrats for 2010. Culver holds the key to their success. If he bucks his party and stands up to Gronstal, his party may have a chance at keeping the majority in the Iowa House. I’m betting he won’t though, despite having campaigned on traditional marriage.

And finally, Republicans do have a chance to capitalize but must act quickly. We absolutely have to get a recorded vote before this legislative session is over. Time to step up as they are predicting an end to this General Assembly as early as this Friday, April 10.

Yes, people are talking about gay marriage, but you should listen to what they’re saying. Aside from the religous right types, most moderates don’t seem particularly concerned, and they’re going to be less so in two or four years. I know this is something to get the base pumped up in the short-term, but that’s not going to win elections, nor is it a vision forward.
It just reaffirms all the commentators saying that Iowa Republicans are increasingly out of the mainstream. Let’s focus on Republican values.

I agree 100%. It’s all in Culver’s hands. I don’t envy his position. Whatever he does, he will have angry people. He will lose the moderate democrats if he doesn’t act fast about gay marriage. He will lose his liberal base if he does do something. I can’t wait to see the GOP’s future adds about Culver’s “I will do everything I can to make sure marriage is between one man and one woman” and then he doesn’t.

Liberty Dan, Wait until they have their kids come home and say, “Mommy, how come I have a mom and a dad and not two moms or two dads?” 7th graders in sex-ed class will come home and show their parents a textbook that says, “It’s OK to “like” our friend. Children will be so confused. They won’t know the difference between liking someone as a friend or as a lover. Schools accross Iowa will have to teach that homosexuality is ok. They might think it doesn’t effect them now, but wait until it is taught in school.

I get so angry with our “fellow” republicans who tell us that abortion and gay marriage are things for us to stop talking about. Yet, the democrats do almost nothing BUT talk about it. The school systems talk about it. Media talks about it. Their politicians talk about it. But, they convinced certain republican operatives that NOT TALKING ABOUT IT is the key to our success. They call that being a useful idiot. This is where the split lies in republican circles. Those that are useful idiots to the dems (John McCain is the national prime example) and those that wish to fight against all this “progress” shoved down our throats and literally up our butts.

Every few election cycles, political parties get a “check up from the neck up”… an “ideological MRI” to see whether the “brains” of the party (i.e., those who set the overall election strategy, control the dispersement of campaign cash, and tell the candidates what to do and how to do it) actually think certain issues are important for their party, or whether they are just a distraction during campaign season. For the Republican Party in our state (of which I am a member), the 2010 election cycle will be one of those visits to the MRI room. The “scans” telling you what is really on the mind of RPI leadership and infrastructure will be the electronic pulses that measure (1) what candidates are told to say, or not to say; (2) what candidates are told to put on their websites, or not to put there; (3) what candidates are told to emphasize in public speeches and private doorsteps, and what not to emphasize, etc. What will our party’s MRI show?
