Iowa Straw Poll to be Held in Boone on August 8

2015 Iowa Straw Poll

The Central Iowa Expo in Boone will be the site of the 2015 Iowa Straw Poll. The Republican Party of Iowa’s State Central Committee selected the site during a Thursday morning conference call. This will mark the first time the event has not been held at Iowa State University in Ames.

The event will take place August 8. Boone was one of four locations that RPI considered. They also received bids to host the event from Iowa State, Drake University in Des Moines and the Iowa Speedway in Newton. Cost was a major issue in selected the Central Iowa Expo.

The Iowa Straw Poll is the first major organizational test for GOP presidential hopefuls.

“Iowa’s agricultural background has always captured the national imagination, and we feel the Central Iowa Expo will help us showcase this heritage. This venue also allows us to keep ticket prices lower, ensuring families from around Iowa can afford to participate in this one-of-a-kind event,” said RPI Chairman Jeff Kaufmann.

“The Iowa straw poll is a tradition stretching back decades, with past winners including George H.W. Bush, Bob Dole, George W. Bush, and Mitt Romney. It’s a family-friendly event that allows Iowans to meet the men and women running to be the next president of the United States. For potential candidates, it’s an unparalleled opportunity to meet thousands of caucus goers in one day,” added RPI Co-Chair Cody Hoefert.
