Controversial Iowa House Representative Tom Shaw announced Monday night he would not seek reelection in 2014. Shaw, a Republican from Laurens, represents House District 10, which includes Pocahontas, Humboldt, Calhoun, and Webster counties.

Shaw’s decision to retire from the House might be considered good news for some Republican legislators. He often battled with members of his own party, particularly on issues like abortion. A steadfast conservative, Shaw refused to support a late-term abortion bill because he would only support legislation that would make all abortions illegal. He repeatedly pushed Personhood legislation during his tenure in the House.

Tom Shaw was first elected to the Iowa House in 2010. Below is the Facebook message Shaw posted Monday night to his supporters:

Dear Supporters,

I would like to let you know that I have made a decision concerning my running for re-election to the Iowa House. After lots of discussion and prayer with my family, I have decided not to seek re-election. I wanted for you to hear it from me before it makes the papers.

I cannot even begin to express my sincere gratitude for the support that you have given me over the past four years. What started in 2009, as a “hair-brained” idea to run for the Iowa House, became a reality when I was elected in 2010. I would have to describe the faith and trust that you showed in me as overwhelming. Every time I asked for your assistance, be it making phone calls, walking in parades, or contributing funds, you always came through.

Honor to God, fidelity to the Constitution, as seen thru the prism of the stated purposes contained in the Declaration of Independence, is my foundation. These guiding principles helped me in determining my votes .. votes placed on behalf of 30,000 Iowans. No man is perfect, but I tried to serve ethically, honorably and truthfully during my tenure.

My “no compromise” approach did not always set well with others. However, in his book “Confrontational Politics”, author H. L. Richardson, retired California State Senator, states, “When we give in to liberals, even an inch, we’re not compromising; we’re abdicating our rights and our honor. When our legislators do likewise, they are abdicating our rights and their honor.”

This email is not just about me. Without the love and support of Diana, I could not have represented you with effectiveness. She is not only my wife, but my Campaign Treasurer, secretary, confidant, and pillar of support. We look forward to maintaining our friendship with each of you.

May God bless our nation, our state, and you.

Sincerely,

Tom W. Shaw
