DES MOINES – Kim Reynolds was officially approved by GOP state convention delegates as the party’s lieutenant governor nominee. Reynolds will once again be on the general election ticket with Governor Branstad this November. The vote was done by acclamation. No other candidates were nominated.

Reynolds thanked the delegates for their support and praised her parents for helping her achieve her goals.

“I wanted to be part of Iowa’s comeback. My parents taught me with hard work and a passion for what you do, anything is possible,” Reynolds said, harkening back to her upbringing in rural Iowa.

Governor Branstad, who was a state delegate, made the nomination. It was followed by a standing ovation by the delegates.

“It is an amazing honor to receive the nomination from the hardest working governor in the nation, Governor Terry Branstad,” Reynolds said.

The Branstad campaign passed out inflated “thundersticks” like you might see at a sporting event. Delegates banged the sticks together to add volume and excitement to the setting.

Reynolds spent part of her speech running down the laundry list of achievements from Branstad’s latest tenure. “We got Iowa working again,” Reynolds said.

“I am so proud and honored to be running again with Governor Branstad. I knew when I signed on it would take a tremendous amount of passion and energy to keep up with the governor because there has never been anyone in the governor’s office or campaign trail who works harder than Governor Branstad,” Reynolds said.

Kim Reynolds was Terry Branstad’s pick for lieutenant governor in 2010, but had to withstand a convention challenge from gubernatorial runner-up Bob Vander Plaats at that year’s state convention. The Branstad campaign worked hard to make sure their supporters were involved in the caucus-to-convention process to withstand a similar challenge.

Reynolds predicted 2014 would be “a groundbreaking year for Iowa Republicans” and talked about the strength of the Iowa Republican ticket, specifically highlighting U.S. Senate nominee Joni Ernst and the congressional nominees.
