Iowa Democrat Rep Snoozes During Oversight Hearing

Iowa House Rep. Ruth Ann Gaines has seemingly taken a newfound interest in her role on the Government Oversight Committee. The Des Moines Democrat appeared to fall asleep several times during a committee hearing two weeks ago.

On Monday, Gaines participated in a House Democrats’ news conference demanding more information from Governor Branstad’s administration regarding the hyperpartisan investigation into confidential agreements made with laid off state employees.

Representative Gaines showed little interest in the topic on April 3 when then-DAS Director Mike Carroll was testifying before the committee. Gaines was captured on video dozing twice, but witnesses said she appeared to fall asleep “at least half a dozen times”.
