Braley Anti-Farmer Comment Featured in Statewide TV Ad

(DES MOINES) — Priorities for Iowa yesterday released an exclusive new video in which Congressman Bruce Braley, speaking to a room full of trial lawyers at a fundraiser in Texas, scoffs at the notion of a “farmer” – Iowa’s long-serving Senator Charles Grassley – chairing the Senate Judiciary Committee.

Further, he tells these out-of-state trial lawyers he will be “your voice” in Washington.

“Bruce Braley tells rich trial lawyers to give him money, ‘help me win’ and he will be their voice in Washington,” said Sara Craig, Director of Priorities for Iowa. “Bruce Braley is putting his values, and this Senate seat, up for sale. This is another example showing Bruce Braley may be good for trial lawyers, but he is bad for Iowa.

“Maybe Bruce Braley doesn’t realize that today we celebrate ‘just an Iowa farmer’ Norman Borlaug’s statue unveiling in the United States Capitol. Makes you wonder what he could have achieved if he’d gone to law school,” said Craig.

A transcript of Congressman Braley’s remarks are as follows:

“To put this in stark contrast, if you help me win this race, you may have someone with your background, your experience, your voice. Someone who’s been literally fighting tort reform for 30 years, in a visible and public way, on the Senate Judiciary Committee.

“Or, you might have a farmer from Iowa, who never went to law school, never practiced law, serving as the next chair of the Senate Judiciary Committee.

“Because if Democrats lose the majority, Chuck Grassley will be chair of the Senate Judiciary Committee.”
“Iowans should be proud to have Charles Grassley as their voice in such an important position, and how out-of-touch is Bruce Braley to think otherwise?” continued Craig. “Bruce Braley sure is arrogant when he’s with his rich trial lawyer buddies. How will he defend this latest gaffe to Iowans? We can’t wait to hear.”
