Latham Urges Supporters to Donate to the Fisher House Foundation following the Pentagon Decision to Deny Benefits During Shutdown

Below is an email that Iowa Congressman Tom Latham just sent to his email list.

Dear Friend:

I know that you share my deep disappointment and outrage over news reports that the Pentagon is denying benefits to the families of fallen soldiers citing the government shutdown as the reason.

Using the most tragic situation a family can experience as a heartless political strategy is absolutely wrong and disgusting.

I am happy to report that the U.S. House will quickly pass legislation today that will explicitly address this exploitive political policy.  We are doing this even though we had already passed comprehensive legislation – signed into law by the President – that guarantees benefits for the families of fallen soldiers and guarantees the pay of our soldiers during any shutdown.

As Americans, we all owe special debt of gratitude to an amazing organization that has stepped forward to help families of fallen soldiers where a dysfunctional and partisan Washington has failed miserably.  The Fisher House Foundation is covering the travel and funeral costs to help families receive the remains of their loved ones who made the ultimate sacrifice for their country.

I am making a personal contribution to this organization to thank them for helping the families of our fallen soldiers and I am asking you to join me.  If every one of my supporters can give just $5.00 to this effort we will reach a goal of raising $50,000 for the Fisher House Foundation and the great work they are doing for our troops and their families.

When you make a contribution it is directly to Fisher House FoundationNone of the generous gifts you and others contribute will benefit my campaign – I am asking you to help because it’s just the right thing to do.

Since 1990, the Fisher House Foundation has been dedicated to supporting our soldiers and their families during trying times and in times of need.  They are best known for the network of comfort homes they build on the grounds of major military and VA medical centers nationwide.  They also operate the Hero Miles Program, using donated frequent flyer miles to bring family members to the bedside of injured service members as well as the Hotels for Heroes program using donated hotel points to allow family members to stay at hotels near medical centers without charge. Fisher House Foundation also manages a grant program that supports other military charities and scholarship funds for military children, spouses and children of fallen and disabled veterans.

Thank you for taking the time to read this message.  I know that even during these trying times for our government that you share my hope and belief for this nation and our gratitude and respect for the men and women of our armed forces who protect freedom every day.

Thank you,

Tom Latham

P.S. Please join me in supporting Fisher House Foundation today as a thank you for helping the families of our fallen troops when Washington failed those families.  Thank you for your generous support of this great organization.
