For Iowa Republicans, 2014 looms as one of the most important election cycles of recent memory, with the state’s first open Senate seat in play since 1974 and Republican Gov. Terry Branstad up for an unprecedented sixth term.

With these big races ahead, you’d expect us to be whipped into a frenzy. And we are — but not about defeating Democrats in 2014. Instead, county leaders, activists, political consultants and the local media have been consumed by an ugly — and at times petty — feud within the state party. Led by an insurgent libertarian wing, our civil war mirrors the one playing out on the national stage for control of the Republican Party, only this fight is more personal in nature.

I recently wrote an article about the state of Republican politics for Politico Magazine, which was published last night.  You can read the article by clicking here.
