DES MOINES—Journalists love transparency. But the question of how much weight to give privacy concerns during reporting on public records flared up last week as the Des Moines Register sparked an explosive controversy by publishing a map that some alleged could put the safety of Iowa students at risk.
The Des Moines Register published—then quickly removed—an interactive map of Iowa schools, detailing which education institutions had school resource officers to provide security. The decision outraged some parents. FoxNews.com reported that the Register tweaked the map to show only districts with full-time security. Then editor Rick Green decided to pull the map entirely.
Fox News interviewed a concerned parent from the Des Moines area, who gave his name as Dave, about his concerns.
