Mullen Stands By Radio Ad in SD 22 Race

Republican Jeff Mullen hit back today at a negative radio ad run by his opponent, incumbent Senator Pat Ward, and reaffirmed that “every word in our ad is true.”

Ward responded to a Mullen campaign radio ad that started airing on Tuesday with a negative spot focused almost entirely against Mullen.
Her complaint was a statement by Mullen that “Pat Ward voted for taxpayer funded abortions”, referring to a May 3, 2006 rollcall where Ward is listed as a “yes” vote for HF 2734, which provided for taxpayer-funded abortions up to and including the day of delivery.

“Pat Ward voted for taxpayer-paid abortions before she voted against them,” Mullen said. “For six years she supported taxpayer-paid abortions. Now, desperate to win reelection, she cast an obvious politically-motivated vote on an amendment that wasn’t going to pass anyway, and has the nerve to claim I am lying about her record.”

Mullen says he isn’t going to back down in the face of Ward’s negative ad campaign. “Pat Ward is one of those so-called ‘moderate Republicans’ who are always giving aid and comfort to left-wing Democrats,” Mullen said. “There’s a lot at stake in this election, and a solidly Republican district like this one should be electing a solid conservative in the State Senate to fight for our values and put taxpayers first.”

“Pat Ward has failed. She failed when she raised the sales tax in a payoff to Iowa’s Teachers Unions. She failed when she voted for taxpayer funded abortions and supported them until just last month. And she failed by remaining silent while our courts redefined marriage. Western Polk and Eastern Dallas Counties need a conservative change. That’s why I’m running for Senate,” Mullen added.

Mullen and Ward are facing off in the reconfigured 22nd State Senate District. Ward, who currently represents a neighboring seat, moved her residence into the new 22nd in order to run. The district includes areas of West Des Moines, Windsor Heights, Clive and Waukee.
