King Breaks Fundraising Record; Supporters Contribute nearly $850,000

King for Congress will report over $1.2 million cash on hand

Congressman Steve King announced his supporters contributed nearly $850,000 to his campaign in the second quarter of this year giving King for Congress over $1.2 million cash on hand.  The amount raised by King breaks the Iowa Congressional candidate fundraising record for a single quarter.

Congressman King continues to rely on Iowans for the vast majority of his campaign’s financial support, as OpenSecrets.org recently reported 83 percent of individual contributions to King for Congress were made by Iowans.

In releasing the statement below, Congressman King thanked his supporters for their commitment and dedication while reminding them of the importance of their continued engagement due to the significant out-of-state resources lining up to defeat him in November.

“This report shows the tremendous grassroots support our campaign has throughout the 4th Congressional District. By any measure, King for Congress just finished an incredible quarter for fundraising, and the credit for success is owed to thousands of Iowans who are tired of watching our American Dream erode and have decided to stand up for the principles that have made this nation great. They made the second quarter an excellent quarter for our campaign, but we all know there is still much work to be done.

“Already, there are at least eight out-of-state, liberal PACs working on Christie Vilsack’s behalf. As we closed the books on our successful second quarter, over $3.2 million in television ads against me were booked for this fall in the 4th Congressional District media markets by Service Employees International Union, Nancy Pelosi’s House Majority PAC and the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee. This is in addition to the tens of thousands the Vilsack campaign has already spent to attack me through mail and radio.

“Today’s announcement shows my supporters take this race very seriously, and it shows we’re on the right track, but now we set our sights on continued success in the third quarter. To my supporters I say, ‘A great big thank you and let’s make the next quarter our best yet.”

The King for Congress campaign’s announcement of nearly $850,000 raised in second quarter fundraising pushed King past the record for money raised in a quarter by an Iowa Congressional candidate. Congressman Bruce Braley (D-IA01), who raised $838,436 in the 4th quarter of 2006, previously held the record for money raised by an Iowa Congressional candidate in a quarter.

The King for Congress Federal Election Commission (FEC) campaign finance report will be filed with the Commission prior to the July 15th deadline.  The campaign’s record-breaking fundraising period is comprised from two separate FEC-required reports, the pre-primary fundraising report and a second report due on July 15th.
