Huntsman Ends Campaign – Backs Romney

Jon Huntsman’s ticket to ride was a one-way ticket home.  After finishing a disappointing third place behind Mitt Romney and Ron Paul in New Hampshire, Huntsman has decided to no longer pursue the Republican nomination.

Even though Huntsman is dropping out of the race and endorsing Mitt Romney, his decision to drop out before tonight’s Fox News debate is helpful to the other candidates who remain.  With fewer people on the debate stage, the remaining candidates will be given a greater opportunity to seal the deal with voters or to engage Romney in the debates.

Huntsman’s decision to get out of the race also will put pressure on candidates like Newt Gingrich and Rick Perry who have yet to place better than Huntsman did in New Hampshire.  Both Gingrich and Perry have yet to finish higher than fourth place in either of the first two contests.
