Matt Schultz: “There’s Something Special About Senator Santorum”

Iowa’s Secretary of State has a message for conservative leaders in Iowa. “This is what I would say to Congressman King and Bob Vander Plaats: It’s time to endorse Senator Santorum.”

That is exactly what Matt Schultz did Friday evening. As a crowd of 75 packed into a room at the Stoney Creek Inn in Johnston for the announcement, Schultz became the foremost Republican in Iowa to declare his support for a GOP presidential candidate this cycle.

“Senator Santorum and I have a lot in common,” Schultz said. “I tend to like the underdog. Slow and steady wins the race. Senator Santorum is a strong conservative and that’s what led me to him.”

Matt Schultz was an underdog in both the GOP primary and the general election last year. Santorum sees the similarities between his campaign and Schultz’s. He also hopes for similar results. Schultz pulled off a major upset of incumbent Michael Mauro and became the youngest Secretary of State in the nation.

“I want to thank him for being a model,” Santorum said. “He ran a grassroots campaign for Secretary of State. A lot of folks did not give him a chance to win the race.”

Four years ago, as a city councilman in Council Bluffs, Matt Schultz endorsed Mitt Romney for president. The Secretary of State’s support was highly sought after this cycle. Schultz said he spoke with most of the candidates, but decided the former Pennsylvania senator was the best option.

“My endorsement is a reflection on what kind of man Senator Santorum is,” Schultz said. “There are things I like about all the candidates, but there’s something special about Senator Santorum…I’m asking all Iowans to give Senator Santorum a second look.”

Schultz added that he intends to lobby his supporters and other GOP officials to get behind Santorum. That is welcome news to Santorum’s campaign. He continues to lag near the bottom of the polls in Iowa and nationally. The former Pennsylvania senator hopes Schultz’s backing can provide a much-needed momentum boost. Santorum says the endorsement helped make Friday the best day of his presidential campaign so far.
