Former U.S. House Speaker Newt Gingrich gives credit to Linda Upmeyer for parts of his strong performance in the GOP presidential debate. Upmeyer, the Iowa House Majority Leader, serves as the state chair for Gingrich’s campaign.
TheIowaRepublican.com caught up with Gingrich for an exclusive interview following the debate. He was the only candidate who mentioned the controversial debt super committee, calling it “about as dumb an idea as Washington has come up with.”
That response, along with other fiery comments, led some observers to proclaim Gingrich the winner of the debate. Gingrich told TheIowaRepublican.com that his comments sprang from a conversation with Upmeyer.
“Actually, Linda Upmeyer was a big part of that,” Gingrich said. “We had breakfast this morning and I said to her, from my position as Speaker, she’s a Majority Leader, I said, ‘Doesn’t it strike you as odd that we have 522 other Senators and House members who are not being engaged. And don’t you think we’d be better off to start with a subcommittees in regular order and go from there’. And she said, ‘That’s exactly right’. I really give her credit for having closed the deal in my own mind.”
Gingrich does not have a space at Saturday’s Ames Straw Poll, but he will be on hand for the event and plans to speak at TheIowaRepublican.com/Google soapbox.
