An Apology to Last Friday’s Carnivorous Catholics

I was a little hard on Newt Gingrich, Doug Gross, and Steve King the other day for eating at the 801 Chophouse on Friday night instead of a seafood place like Splash.  I know, 801 has plenty of seafood on its menu, but we all know how tempting it can be to order a steak when you are at a fine eating establishment like 801.

Not only was I harsh on Newt for saying that he probably ordered a steak because he was feeling overly patriotic, which has led to previous indiscretions, but I was also wrong.

One of my local krustaceans who just happens to be Catholic, informed me of my error by sending me the following:

Solemnity of the Annunciation of the Lord

Yesterday the Worship Office received a question about abstinence from meat on Friday, 25 March 2011.  Bishop Pates would like to remind everyone that Friday March 25th is the Feast of the Annunciation of the Lord. This day is celebrated as a solemnity, and thus, in accordance with canon 1251 the requirement to observe the penitential practice of abstinence from meat is abrogated (waived) on that day.

Canon 1251 reads: Abstinence from meat, or from some other food as determined by the Episcopal Conference, is to be observed on all Fridays, unless a solemnity should fall on a Friday. Abstinence and fasting are to be observed on Ash Wednesday and Good Friday.

This is a day meant for celebration of Mary’s “Yes!” and of Christ’s incarnation rather than fasting. We hope you all enjoy this special feast.

Hold the fish sticks, we’ve got some meat to eat!!!!!

It looks like I owe Newt a steak.  I wonder if he would settle for a piece of Casey’s breakfast pizza?

Bachmann/Braley 2012?

Iowa Congressman Bruce Braley (D-Bad Guy), was on the same flight as Minnesota Congresswoman Michele Bachmann (R-Good Woman) yesterday.  Proof that the two absolutely have nothing in common they discussed roller derby.

I bet as a puny little kid Bruce Braley saw roller derby as a prime area for lawsuits or something.  Seriously though, who wouldn’t have liked to been a fly on the wall of that plane.

Linn County to Name Building After a Fat Unemployed Guy

What the hell is wrong with Cedar Rapids?  If it wasn’t bad enough that Ron Corbett is noting more than puppet for the labor unions, Linn County is now going to name a $16.3 million community services facility after Chet Culver.

The only reason is this honor going to be bestowed on Culver is because he was the one who cut them a big fat check.  What a great practice to start.  Seriously, we are going to honor a one-term governor because he kept the money flowing into the county follow the 2008 flood?

Slow Speed Trains Kill

A woman in a wheelchair was killed when a train in Ames hit her last week.  While the accident seems to be a suicide, nearly 50 people died and hundreds more were injured in train accidents in 2009.  Just imagine how many more would die if we expand high speed rail?  : )
