2010 New Year’s Resolutions

Written by Rod Blum

During 1977 an English rock band was formed in London named “The Police”. In 1983 Sting, who was the group’s lead singer, wrote a song called “Every Breath You Take”. The new Congress would do well to remember the opening lines from that song:

Every breath you take, every move you make
Every bond you break, every step you take
I’ll be watching you.

Conservative voters need to watch what politicians actually do instead of what they say. Here’s what the GOP should do in 2011:

1. READ THE CONSTITUTION.

At about 4,400 words, it is one of the shortest written Constitutions in the world. By way of contrast, the ObamaCare bill weighs in around 180,000 words and growing. Congress regularly passes massive pieces of legislation with little regard to constitutional limits – sadly citizens readily give up personal freedoms for a government handout. We’re willingly putting ourselves into virtual soup lines.

2. GET YOUR OWN HOUSE IN ORDER BEFORE YOU TELL US HOW TO RUN OURS.

Any laws passed should apply to members of Congress, INCLUDING healthcare. Congress typically fails to perform its most basic job – approving a budget. No budget – suspend Congressional pay until one is passed. And here’s a radical idea: actually READ the bills you pass. Post them online for at least fourteen days before voting. Stop pork-barrel spending called earmarks. Earmarks may be a small part of a deficit, but they’re responsible for a large part of the corruption in Congress.

3. JOBS, JOBS, JOBS.

The top priority should be job creation. It’s been fairly obvious that stimulus spending, money that is being borrowed from our grandchildren, just plain does not work. Business doesn’t create new jobs when they’re uncertain about the future. Job creators recognize that Obama is anti-business – they struggle to meet employer mandates; accommodate new taxes on insurance, drugs, and investment; and comply with piles of new Federal agency regulations and IRS paperwork. Note to President Obama: You can’t help employees by hurting the employers.

4. END THE BINGE – RESTORE FISCAL SANITY.

It’s time for us to wake up to the lethal threat of our own fiscal irresponsibility – we are on an unsustainable path. The victims of our selfish spending addiction include the innocent souls who are near and dear to us – our children. Our outstanding government debt totals over $13.6 trillion. And that doesn’t include the unfunded liabilities of Social Security, Medicare and Medicaid, which total over $100 trillion according to the Social Security Trustees.

5. REPEAL OBAMACARE.

Congress must defund ObamaCare and repeal it when we have a new president. The law represents the worst possible approach to health-care policy. Its unspoken purpose is to bring the middle class into permanent dependence on the federal government. And Democrats know that a dependent voter results in a dependable vote for Democrats.

6. SECURE OUR BORDERS.

This can easily be accomplished IF Washington wants it done. But the same government that strip searches my eighty-one year old mother at the airport can’t stop a Mexican from crossing the border? Right. Congress needs to get tough with employers who hire illegal aliens – when the jobs dry up the aliens will self-deport back to Mexico.

7. PROMOTE THE FAMILY.

According to a U.S. Census Bureau study, marriage drops the probability of child poverty by eighty-two percent . . . EIGHTY-TWO PERCENT. Was that a pin dropping? The family, not a village, has always been the backbone of America.

When citizens fear their government, there is tyranny; when the government fears the citizens, there is liberty. Stay vigilant my good friends.
