The politics of personal destruction ruled Election Day in the Third Congressional Distrct. Polls had shown Brad Zaun being very competitive with incumbent Democrat Leonard Boswell, but Boswell’s constant barrage of attack ads paid off in the end as he squeaked out yet another victory against a formidable GOP challenger.
Zaun was a relentless campaigner, but had some missteps along the way. Zaun never really responded effectively to the personal attacks and distortions of his record until just before the election was over, and by then it was just too late to restore the damage that had been done by Leonard Boswell and the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee. Given the enormous amount of resources expended by the Democrats, Zaun did amazingly well – just not quite well enough to win.
