I was the third person to vote in my precinct in Ankeny this morning. This is the first time I have voted in Polk County since participating in the 2000 caucuses, back then I was an Urbandale resident.
Three election officials greeted me as I came through the door. The first lady asked if I had my voter registration card. One of the other workers said, “He doesn’t need to show that.” Then she asked to see my ID. The other worker said, “He doesn’t need to show that either.”
I just smiled through the exchange because I think it’s so odd that we don’t have to show any ID to vote. All you need is for your name to be in the book. Since I have yet to update my drivers licenses, it’s probably a good thing I didn’t have to show an ID. I had nothing on me that indicated that I was an Ankeny resident.
