Yesterday, State Auditor Dave Vaudt basically said that Governor Culver must be an idiot because the budget he submitted is illegal. Vaudt contends that Culver’s budget is at least $25 million above the state’s spending limits because of inaccurate calculations. As I was driving around town, I heard Vaudt on the radio saying, “I can say that 1 + 1 = 3, but we all know that’s not right.” Ouch.
Vaudt pointed out that $83 million of the $341 million in spending cuts that Culver’s consultant proposed are actually cuts on accounts other than the general fund. So, while it’s still a cost savings, it doesn’t help Culver close his budget gap. Vaudt also pointed out that Culver counted $13 million in savings due to furloughs, but no additional furloughs have been ordered. He also says the Culver forgot factor in $86 million in salary increases.
Culver’s spokesman Troy Price responded to Vaudt by saying, “It took him [Vaudt] two weeks to do this? Either he fell asleep at the switch, and just now got around to looking at the budget, or he needed to take two weeks to put this outlandish and ridiculous attack together. I certainly hope the Auditor’s auditing practices are more timely than his review of the Governor’s budget.”
No, dumbass. Vaudt took the time to thoroughly go through the Governor’s budget. It’s too bad Governor Culver didn’t take the process of drafting a budget as seriously as Vaudt was in analyzing it. Seriously, it’s embarrassing that the Governor included savings for the general fund that simply are not there. This all goes to show Governor Culver’s incompetence, and it’s obvious the he and his staff don’t know what the hell they are doing.
In the lead up to the 2008 elections, I had to breakout the Schoolhouse Rock video to help explain how a bill becomes a law to 4th District Congressional candidate Becky Greenwald (D – Des Moines Register). Even with the support of the Register’s editorial board, Becky still couldn’t understand how a bill becomes a law. So, I tried to help her out.
Now, I don’t think there is anything I can do to help Chet. In an attempt to find out why Culver is so incompetent, I talked to a handful of administrators from Bethesda-Chevy Chase High School in Maryland. The story they told me was shocking, but it explains why Culver is such an idiot.
