Surge Up Sunday: December 12:12 One Body

Here in Iowa (Des Moines) my church is closed today due to of course the blizardy wizardry weather.  How about you?  What’s the weather like in your neck of the woods? I hope you were not hanging out in the Metrodome last night when it collapsed.

I thought I’d introduce early a new TIR feature that will often run on Sundays in 2011. “Surge Up Sunday” will simply be a devotional type blog appearing on Sundays.  Sometimes the topics will be inspired by news and politics, sometimes the tie in will be that its simply Sunday, time for a compelling and radical devotion.

So here is today’s compelling and radical devotion thought while I hear the wind howl outside my window and my kids prance around the house like its a snowed in school day. Let’s start with today’s date.  12:12.  December 12th.  Twelve days before Christmas Eve if you’re counting. (My prancing kids are.)

One of the best bible verses that fits the same numerical address as 12:12, thus matching the numbers of today’s date is from 1 Corinthians 12:12.  (I blog the best matching verses just like this one everyday at http://www.facebook.com/verserehearse and http://twitter.com/VerseRehearse .)

December 12th (12:12) 1 Corinthians 12:12 Just as a body, though one, has many parts, but all its many parts form one body, so it is with Christ.

I couldn’t help that think this verse was relevant today not only because many churches need a recharge of relevance in our culture, but because our culture needs a recharge of what the church really can offer if the church is line with Christ as one body described in 1 Corinthians.

I’ll let you make your own tie in conclusions with politics, government and the republican party and here may be the inspiration… A music video by Flyleaf (linked below) has everything to do with today’s Verse Rehearse verse in 1 Corinthians 12:12.

While Flyleaf’s musical or video style may not be for everyone, the lyrical message is relevant in their song, “Beautiful Bride,” which paints imagery of the “bride of Christ” a common theme in the new testament.  Enjoy the song…

“Unified diversity Functioning as one body Every part encouraged by the other No one independent of another You’re irreplaceable, indispensable You’re incredible Incredible

(Chorus) Beautiful bride Body of Christ One flesh abiding Strong and unifying Fighting ends in forgiveness Unite and fight all division Beautiful bride / Strengthen your arms now Train your fingers for battle

Urgency’s here now Train your fingers for battle Fighting this violence With your feet wrapped in peace Sad tears and silence Now screams of joy Victory

We’re not gonna fall and forget How far You went to pick us up If one part’s hurt the whole body’s sick If one part mourns we all mourn with Him Rejoice, and we’ll sing with you Hallelujah, Hallelujah, Hallelujah, Hallelujah”

Songwriters: Bhattacharya, Sameer; Culpepper, James; Hartmann, Jared; Mosley, Lacey Nicole; Seals, Kirkpatrick

December 12th (12:12) Hebrews 12:12 Just as a body, though one, has many parts, but all its many parts form one body, so it is with Christ.
