State Rep. Erik Helland Charged With DUI, Interference with Official Acts

Early this morning, State Representative Erik Helland was arrested for drinking and driving. Helland released the following statement regarding his recent arrest:

“I deeply regret the mistake I made to drink and drive. I apologize to my family, constituents, colleagues and all Iowans for the harmful and dangerous error that I made. I fully accept the consequences of my actions and am truly sorry. ”

Details about the arrest:

Time of arrest was 12:47 am

Arresting officer was State Trooper Brett Tjepkes. State Trooper Tjepkes is the son of Republican State Representative Dave Tjepkes (R-Gowrie).

He submitted to a preliminary breath screening test (PBT) which indicated an alcohol concentration of .08 or more.

At 2:21 am he exercised his right to refuse chemical testing.

He was charged with Operating While Intoxicated (OWI) and Interference with Official Acts. He was not charged with resisting arrest.

He met the terms of his bail and was released this morning.

His court date is Monday, June 14th, 2010 at 1:00 pm
