“Baseball lost a legend, Iowa has lost one of its best-known sons, and our nation has lost a true patriot.
“Bob Feller, a farm kid who grew up in Van Meter, reached the heights baseball stardom as a hard-throwing pitcher for the Cleveland Indians. But he put his career on hold to join the U.S. Navy in the days following the attack on Pearl Harbor.
“He’ll go down in history for his hall-of-fame career, his 266 wins and his dominant fastball. But his commitment to his country was every bit as impressive. I join Iowans everywhere in mourning the loss of one of our own.”
