INDEPENDENCE, IA – Ben Lange, a rising conservative candidate seeking the Republican nomination to challenge the liberal Democrat incumbent Bruce Braley in Iowa’s 1st Congressional District, today sharply rebuked statements reportedly made by Will Johnson, his lone Primary opponent, to the Quad City Times that the Central Intelligence Agency and the Department of Homeland Security are unconstitutional. Johnson was reported to have said that he would defund both agencies.
Lange issued the following statement:
I learned yesterday that Will Johnson, my lone opponent for the Republican nomination in Iowa’s 1st Congressional District, has stated that the Central Intelligence Agency and the Department of Homeland Security — agencies responsible for critical security functions of any sovereign nation, including intelligence collection and border protection — are unconstitutional and should be defunded.
As a Republican candidate in this race, I feel I have the duty on behalf of our Constitution, our party, and Eastern Iowans to call these statements what they are — bizarre, uninformed, and irresponsible. These latest statements are further evidence of my opponent’s pattern of confusing legitimate issues of constitutional concern such as the federal government forcing private citizens to purchase particular goods or services from private companies, with illegitimate issues such as claiming the CIA and DHS are unconstitutional.
My opponent’s statements not only diminish the work of men and women at the CIA and DHS who work day in and day out to keep us safe, but given my opponent’s professed ties to at least two local Tea Parties, such statements leave what I believe is the wrong impression that Tea Party members in Eastern Iowa support such bizarre and fringe statements. The Tea Party members I know are hardworking, patriotic citizens who support our military, support our intelligence agencies, support robust border security, and believe in legitimate constitutional principles of limited government and individual liberty. This is why I support their efforts and this is why I will continue to defend them.
