Grassley now Airing Two New Commercials

U.S. Sen. Chuck Grassley’s re-election campaign is airing two new television commercials. The first underscores his efforts to increase international trade opportunities for Iowa employers, workers and entrepreneurs while second focuses on his role as the leading proponent of wind energy.

The 30-second commercial, entitled “Who”, opens with an Iowan who notes, “Every other year, ambassadors and high-ranking diplomats gather in Iowa to learn about our state. And who brings them together? The State Department? UN?”

Grassley, dressed in jeans and a blue work shirt, appears on the screen, and says, “Who brings them here? I do. To open up opportunities for Iowa exports and the good jobs that come with it. We can’t wait on Washington to do it.”

The ad, which intertwines photos of the ambassador tours that Grassley has organized, ends with a young woman and young man saying, “Grassley Works. For Us.”

Grassley began the tour in 1986 during the midst of the agriculture recession to help bring economic development opportunities to Iowa.  The first tour brought representatives to Iowa from several dozen countries and nearly 70 countries were represented on the 2009 tour.  Last year, nearly half of the countries were represented by full ambassadors, showing the value that the international community places on the tour.

Export-related jobs pay 15 to 18 percent more than the national average, according to the U.S. Trade Representative’s Office. Export-supported jobs in the manufacturing sector account for more than 10 percent of Iowa’s total private-sector employment and more than one-fifth of all manufacturing workers in Iowa depend on exports for jobs, according to the Commerce Department. Census of Agriculture statistics indicate that Iowa ranks first among all states in exports of soybeans, feed grains, live animals and meat.

The second ad, “Lightning,” notes that Grassley made Iowa wind farms possible by authoring tax legislation to encourage the development of wind energy.  “I also wrote laws for solar energy and biofuels. Our future is right here. Not in Saudi Arabia. I want to do even more – here in Iowa,” Grassley says.

“Who” and “Lightning” are the fifth and sixth Grassley television commercials to air since Sept. 7.
