Fallout over Kim Lehman’s 08 Actions Still Linger

kim lehmanIn 2008, newly elected National Committeewoman Kim Lehman created a lot of chaos right before the general election when she sent out an email that called 2nd Congressional District Republican nominee Mariannette Miller-Meeks a “pretender” on the life issue. Lehman was censured for her actions by the Republican Party of Iowa following the election.

At the time, Lehman told the Republican State Central Committee that she would be leaving her post at Iowa Right to Life. This placated a number of central committee members. People assumed that Lehman’s departure from Iowa Right to Life would happen quickly, but it didn’t occur until just a few days ago.

Rep. Jeff Kaufman, who has been critical of Lehman’s actions in regards to Miller-Meeks, sent a reply to the email announcing Lehman’s new position with the Stem Cell Institute. Below are the emails that were sent to me.

This is a positive change for Iowa Right to Life and I look forward to working with the new director and building the bridges that have been disrupted the last few years.

Jeff,

My office forwarded this e-mail to me, and I have to say that you didn’t get a positive reception from my staff.

Good luck on that bridge of yours.

Kim,

This is not a particularly constructive message from a national committee woman to a Republican Assistant Leader. At some point I am hoping you begin to show leadership with the Republican hat you wear.

To mock building bridges is certainly not helpful or particularly professional.

Sincere best wishes in your new position. I do hope at some point we can work together on building Republican majorities. This is not about you or me, it is about Iowa.

Jeff,

I am responding to an insult you provided to my office. Apparently you don’t want to take responsibility for your actions. This latest jab that went to my staff was completely unnecessary on your part–believe me they noticed the rude comment. If you are truly interested in building a bridge with the next director then you would not have sent a critical e-mail to Iowa Right to Life about me.
I am more then capable, happy–and willing to work with you if you are willing to do the same. However, remember that insults don’t go too far. As the National Committeewoman, I expect respect as you obviously expect from me for your leadership position. Lets try this again. I would like to try to mend our differences. Would you be willing to work this out and mend the bridge?

Kim,

The first step in healing is the admittance of wrong. Very disappointing.

What you are characterizing as an insult is the widespread view in eastern Iowa, including many pro-life Republicans and I think you know that.

I would rather you attack me, though, than the hundreds of eastern Iowa citizens who also disagree with your actions through the years. I will stand by these constituents and citizens every time they ask me. The people trump party positions every time.

At this point I will close our dialogue with my best wishes in your new endeavor.

Jeff

Lehman’s new job is based out of Iowa City, which means she is likely to bump into a number of her “friends” in the 2nd CD. It’s never boring in the 2nd CD, but do we really have to let this linger?
