Yesterday, American Future Fund requested a second formal investigation by the Office of Congressional Ethics into the conduct of Bruce Braley for use of official staff and resources for campaign activities. Braley has allowed a member of his congressional staff to perform campaign duties while being subsidized by the federal government which is in clear violation of House Rules.
Congressman Braley’s official congressional communications director, Caitlin Legacki, has been identified as the campaign spokesperson during normal business hours without compensation or reimbursement from Braley’s campaign account or leadership PAC. Ms. Legacki has engaged in campaign activity while on paid government time on numerous occasions. She has been quoted speaking on behalf of the campaign, has appeared at campaign events, acted as a spokesperson for the campaign and has even tweeted about her campaign activities.
Ms. Legacki was recently quoted in the Waterloo Courier, responding to AFF’s first ethics complaint against Braley for using official House footage on his campaign website. She admitted the violation, adding that the videos had been on Braley’s campaign website for more than 2 years and that Braley dismissed the complaint as a “distraction” to the campaign rather than a serious violation of House ethics.
“Congressman Braley continues to demonstrate his complete indifference for the House Rules. His latest violation, the use of taxpayer funds for campaign activities, is appalling and offensive to the people of Iowa,” stated AFF Spokesman Nick Ryan.
