“Dr. Phil” Episode Featuring Grassley, Landrieu on Foster Care to Air Friday

Sen. Chuck Grassley of Iowa and Sen. Mary Landrieu of Louisiana are set to appear in an episode of the “Dr. Phil” show dedicated to foster care scheduled to air this Friday, October 1, 2010.

Grassley and Landrieu were Dr. Phil McGraw’s guests as co-chairs of the Senate Caucus on Foster Youth.  They taped the episode of the nationally syndicated weekday television show earlier this month.

“Each year about 30,000 kids leave foster care.  Some have no place to call home,” Grassley said.   “I’m sure that after viewing this episode, Dr. Phil’s viewers will want to help.  They can urge their member of Congress to put foster care reform at the top of Congress’ agenda next year and work to mentor or adopt a foster youth themselves. “

Grassley is founder of the Senate Caucus on Foster Youth, which came about at the request of foster youth themselves.  One of the caucus’ goals is to substantively involve foster youth in shaping the policies that affect them.  In keeping with this idea, the “Dr. Phil” episode includes two youth who participated in the Congressional Coalition on Adoption Institute’s 2010 Foster Youth Intern Program, who give first-hand accounts of their experiences growing up in foster care.

“There has always been a lack of awareness about the challenges that plague the hundreds of thousands of children and youth in care,” Landrieu said, “This episode provides a forum not only for youth to give voice to their experiences in care and to identify ways to improve the child welfare system, but also gives viewers the opportunity to be a part of the change.  ”

The air date coincides with the two-year anniversary of the enactment of the bipartisan “Fostering Connections to Success and Increasing Adoption Act of 2008,” the most significant child welfare bill to be enacted in more than a decade.  Grassley and Landrieu are preparing options to build on that successful policy.
