The Iowa Family Policy Center conducted a gubernatorial Straw Poll at the Iowa State Fair, which came to a close this past Sunday. Nobody is surprised that Bob Vander Plaats won the Straw Poll, but the results are far closer than some might have imagined. The following are the results.
Vander Plaats – 340
Branstad – 311
King – 194
None of the Above/Mickey Mouse – 102
Culver – 89
Roberts – 72
Fong – 31
Rants – 28
McKinley – 20
Behn – 8
While the poll is unscientific, the first thing that jumps out is that former Governor Terry Branstad holds his own with Bob Vander Plaats. Branstad, who is not even an announced candidate, came up only 29 votes short of Vander Plaats’ 340 votes. Both Vander Plaats and Branstad pummeled the other contenders, including Governor Culver, who received 89 votes.
Another interesting observation is that the third place finisher was another non-candidate, Congressman Steve King. King, who has been coy about his political ambitions, is a champion of the social conservatives. In fourth place was Mickey Mouse or none of the above.
The Iowa Family Policy Center will be holding a Family Values Summit at the State Fairgrounds on September 12th. The event is a hog roast, and those in attendance will be given the opportunity to vote for their candidate of choice at the conclusion of the event. Thus far, Bob Vander Plaats, Chris Rants, Christian Fong, and Rod Roberts have confirmed their attendance for that event.
