Aplington-Parkersburg Football Coach Ed Thomas was murdered this morning in the school’s weight room. Reports indicate that Thomas was shot in the head at point-blank range while students were working out in the weight room. A suspect is currently in custody at the Butler County jail. Butler County Sheriff Jason Johnson said the suspect is a “young individual.”
The news of the murder or Coach Thomas comes just a little over a year after the community was devastated by a tornado. Thomas and his football team were credited with lifting the spirits of the community following last year’s deadly tornado.
Thomas coached four current NFL players Brad Meester (Jaguars), Casey Wiegmann (Broncos), Jared DeVries (Lions) and Aaron Kampman (Packers).
UPDATE: Coach Thomas was killed by a former football player named Mark Becker.
Senator Grassley just released a statement. Grassley lives near New Hartford, approximately 9 miles east of Parkersburg.
“This is a tragic day. In our area of the state, it’s hard not to know Coach Thomas. He was a pillar of the community. His success on the football field made him an icon in his profession, but the people who knew him will remember him most for his leadership off the field. His leadership to help pull up a community knocked off its feet by an F-5 tornado only a year ago will forever be etched in the minds of Parkersburg residents and Iowans across our state. For more than three decades Coach Thomas led young men in more than just the game of football. He led them in the lessons of life. Barbara and I express our deepest sympathies to his family.”
