Rep. Upmeyer says state leaders need to shoulder burden for Iowa economy
GARNER – Five weeks into the 2009 legislative session and one local Republican leader is still concerned by the amount of new and current spending Governor Chet Culver and House and Senate Democrats are committed to.
Rep. Linda Upmeyer-R, Garner, says the governor and Democrat leaders have promised to go line by line through the budget to cut wasteful and extensive spending, yet lawmakers were in session for more than two weeks before Culver even released his budget.
Upmeyer expressed frustration that the session is moving forward quickly, but some lawmakers aren’t.
“I ask the simple question to those who are waiting to begin the budget review process,” Upmeyer said, “If families and businesses in Iowa are being forced to trim their budgets right now, then why isn’t the State of Iowa doing the same?”
While the national economy continues a downward spiral, Iowa’s own financial state isn’t much safer. Upmeyer says her biggest worry is that the State of Iowa is in such financial trouble due to mismanagement and excessive spending increases and that some people are hoping that the Federal Government will bail them out of the mess.
