Either Jeff Lamberti has talked to his family about running for Governor, or his daughter is doing all she can do to convince him to run. Lamberti’s daughter Meredith is recruiting people on her Facebook page to work for her Dad’s campaign. Lamberti, who has not announced his candidacy, has been the subject of rumors for a couple weeks now.
We don’t know if this is a serious conversation or not, but Lamberti would fit the profile of a Republican candidate who could do well in this political environment. Lamberti, a former legislator, ran for Congress in 2006 and gave Congressman Leonard Boswell all he could handle. Lamberti lost hit to 46% to 52% but many believe he would have defeated Boswell had it not been such a bad year for Iowa Republicans.
2006 proved to be a terrible year for Iowa Republicans of all stripes. Jim Nussle was defeated by Chet Culver 44% to 54%, and then-Republican Congressman Jim Leach, a 15 term Congressman, was defeated by Dave Loebsack. Republicans also lost Iowa House and Senate seats.
In his campaign for Congress Lamberti proved to be a formidable fundraiser. Lamberti raised nearly $1.8 million compared to Boswell’s $2.1 million.
