I have mixed feelings about the state fair. On one hand it’s an event that all Iowa should attend at least once in their lifetime. I’m always surprised by those who have never gone. I also can understand why some people don’t like it.
There are the people with enormous strollers who give you the evil eye you don’t get out of their way. Then there are all those people in motorized scooters who creep along at a slow pace. And finally there those who once they get a giant turkey leg in their hand they walk around like they are drunk.
It seems like every time I go to the fair I end up trying to navigate my way through a group like the one mentioned above. Now this year there is something new. There are these little kids with monkey back packs which their parents hook a dog leash to. That’s all we need, people walking at a slow pace with ropes to trip people with…
Why isn’t there a Des Moines Register Soap Box?
I know it’s not an election year, but why not have our elected officials and their opponents talk about health care? Talk about filling a need and creating some news. What am I thinking, that wouldn’t fit the Des Moines Register’s political agenda…
I’m always disturbed by the huge set-ups that our statewide elected officials create at the fair. You know what I’m talking about, the State Treasurers huge set up that tries to tell people what he does. Funny thing is there was no mention about his mismanagement of the IPERS fund. Talk about the great Iowa treasure hunt!
The weirdest thing I saw was the huge scale at the Secretary of Ag display. Seriously, after eating all that fair food the last thing I want to do is weigh myself. Yikes. That said, I’ll give someone 100 bucks if you can get Culver on that thing. Maybe it’s not that bad of an idea after all.
So what do you think about the fair? What do you like to do?
