ternusI know I’m a day late on this given the need to comment on the Branstad poll questions yesterday, but I can’t let the big story of the weekend go by without comment.

How freaking embarrassing is it to be the chief justice of the Iowa Supreme Court and have your husband and son arrested? For sponsoring and participating in an underage drinking party?

I’m gonna say that’s about a 17 on a scale of one to ten. A few steps lower than an Argentinean girlfriend, but still off the charts. If you’re going to be the highest authority on what is legal in this state, you (and those under your roof, or in your yard as the case may be) had better be obeying the law.

So, I know a lot of this is speculation, but here’s my take on the situation.

First, if you have the personality type to be chief justice of the Supreme Court, don’t tell me you have no idea that your underage kid is having beer parties at your house and your husband is condoning it.

Second, if you’re a dad playing drunk driving police at the end of the driveway, don’t tell me you don’t know exactly what your kid is up to and exactly where the beer came from.

Third, if you’re the dad here and you manage to get yourself arrested for interference with official acts, you probably did or said something exceedingly stupid. Not the actions of a responsible adult parent accomplished attorney who makes over $600,000 per year. But then again, who said that rich lawyers are smart, especially when it comes to thinking you are above the law.

Fourth, if you are the chief justice and your husband and son got arrested, and you happened to be out of town at the time, I’d answer that question about my whereabouts when the reporters came around asking. In my mind, “no comment” means I was there and I don’t want to talk about it.

IF any of the above speculation is true, I am highly disturbed at the thought of someone engaged in something illegal and something so stupid sitting in judgment of other people, basically making decisions about what’s moral and what’s not… what’s right and what’s wrong, when she can’t even make those determinations in her own life.

Kind of provides a lot of insight into some recent decisions with moral consequences.
