The Des Moines Register is reporting that Governor Culver told reporters today that he would veto the Gas Tax bill if lawmakers send him the bill.
Democrat Leadership in the Iowa House and Senate had been considering a bill that would increase the tax on gasoline by eight cents per gallon. The bill was divisive among Republicans as some members were open to the idea of a gas tax to fix Iowa’s roads and bridges.
In a town-hall meeting in Iowa City on Wednesday, Culver told those in audience that he would be releasing the details of his $750 million dollar bonding proposal next week. He indicated at that time that a little less than $250 million of the bonding money was being targeted for Iowa roads and bridges.
