What the hell is going on in Sweden?
First, I see an article which told me that officials in that country were asked by doctors what they should do in the situation in which a woman bases her decision to have an abortion on the gender of the baby.
This was not just a hypothetical question. The doctors were treating a woman who had had an amniocentesis to check for genetic abnormalities. The baby was fine, but it was a girl, and they woman already had two girl children, so she decided she wanted to kill this child, because, apparently, she wanted a boy.
And what was the government’s answer?
Killing a baby because you don’t like its gender is a-okay in Sweden.
And just as I was being nauseated by that story, I came across another that was equally disturbing.
For a long time, gay couples could have civil unions in Sweden, but that wasn’t good enough, and as of May 1st, they now have full rights to marriage.
Now that’s not good enough either.
You see, the Lutheran Church was the state church in Sweden until 2000, so just about everyone is Lutheran, and they want to get married in the Lutheran Church.
The current version of the marriage law allows pastors to opt out of marrying gay couples if they have a conscientious objection. But, there is a vocal faction within the legislature that wants to force pastors to marry gays, even if those pastors believe gay marriage goes against their religious beliefs.
While that provision is not yet law, it probably won’t take long for it to become law given that the Lutheran hierarchy in Sweden is not opposed to gay marriage, so it looks like it’s only a matter of time.
With so many of our own churches and pastors ignoring Biblical law and staying silent on the gay marriage issue (and abortion) right here in Iowa, I can only think that we only have to look at Sweden to see a glimpse of our future.
This is what happens when good people do nothing.
